So I have a decent amount of Kustom Kolor airbrush paint untouched, and I have one or two spray cans un used, for a couple of years actually (obviously since they haven't made any for a couple of years lol) but my question is this..... what kind of clear should I use with it?

When I learned how to paint 1:1 cars, we pretty much used the brand primer and clear as the basecoat, but since I never bought KK primer or clear, this would be pretty much impossible. So what is recommended?

Also, I remember back in the day someone saying that the KK was already thinned out ready to spray through an airbrush or air gun, but seeings how it is old, and using my Eclipse I would need to thin it out, so what reducer can I use for the liquid paints?

I have used laquer thinner and used Testors Wet Look Clear and have had good results . Some of the KK paints do need to be thinned and some were thin enough to airbrush. Hope that helps a little. This Camaro was Painted using KK Kosmos Red.

As far as primer goes I reccomend Plasticote or Tamiya in rattlecans (decanted for your brush)

with KK being a hybrid paint I would use future as a clearcoat.you can brush!! it or spray it and if your not happy...windex it off

PS Ranger whats your name???

Kustom Kolor Kwestions, yeah, questions with a "Kw" was lame.

At least you knew what you were doing, that's cool. Some people spell that badly without knowing that they are.

I got some just recently at a good price. I use duplicolor automotive primer under it. I also use duplicolor auto clear over it. I mix it 50/50 with laquar thinner and sprayes good at around 20LBS pressure through my Paasche. Thanks. Jody

The sad fact that it's true makes me cry. lol.

I've had best results thinning Kustom Kolor bottle paints with Gunze Sangyo Mr. Color thinner. The stuff airbrushes beautifully.

You can use just about any lacquer primer (Duplicolor, Plastikote, or Tamiya) under KK. I generally use Tamiya primers with KK, Tamiya sprays, and Mr. Color.

As to clears, either Tamiya clear spray, Gunze Sangyo Mr. Topcoat spray, or Gunze Sangyo Mr. Color bottled clear work well over KK in my experience.

Hope that helps!

it seems to me that different type of base coats are perfectly compatible with different types of clear IF you allow the base coat to dry properly

i usually let it cure for a week or two and spray on whatever clear i have

never onces orange peeled on me

I bought a bunch of this stuff and I've experimented with Kustom Kolors "Airbrush Reducer," "Thinner," and cheap lacquer thinner and gotten good results with all three. The "Airbrush Reducer" seems to behave like a lacquer with a relatively fast drying time and less gloss than the "Thinner." I've seen others recommend the "Thinner" for brush painting because of the slower drying time. The trick is to know which clears you can use. Kustom Kolors "Acrylic Clear" will craze when sprayed over KK paint thinned with KK "Thinner." I use Krylon Crystal Clear over KK thinned paint. Also, the metallic KK colors are very thick and must be reduced significantly, as much a 4:1 thinner to paint ratio. The psi will depend on the viscosity of the paint and your personal preference. I've used a range of 19 psi to 35 psi to KK paints. Experiment on spoons with the combination that you want to use before shooting it on your model. I've used duplicolor primer under KK paint with no problems.
