LOBBS Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 (edited) Congrats on your new edition. I'm a fellow basement dweller here. I started in the spare bedroom down there but we took in some "strays" (friends of my wife down on there luck) that required me to move my stuff over to the family room in the basement. That was a couple of years ago now and I just haven't moved back across the hall. Now that my 6 month old son is ready for his first room, we're converting the family room downstairs into a big bedroom for my oldest boys (8 and 6). So I have to move all my stuff back to where it was originally when we moved in. The only one not getting shuffled around this summer is my 2 year old daughter. At one point, my wife tried to convince me to give up the hobby because my work has kept me from building on a consistent basis and free up the space. Now that I've gotten the older boys involved in the hobby I've been able to plant a stake for a permanent place. She just rolls her eyes now as we all tromp off to our man-cave. diymirage Posted July 24, 2009 Author Posted July 24, 2009 LOBBS, i cant wiat for the day i can share my hobbies with my child i was out at the beach yesterday with my niece and nephew (9 and 11) and i was thinking how much fun it would be to have one of my own running there with me it is quite the excitement as for the hobbyroom since i am going to build it per spec. any suggestions ?
george 53 Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 Eelco, since your gonna hafta build yer room, the sky's the limit!(AND your wallet!). I don't know where you live, but in the Northern climes, make SURE it's insulated, or has GOOD heat reception. My room is downstairs too, an it gets down to 68 degrees in there when it's really cold outside. My spray booth is vented thru a Charcoal filter,an it does a GREAT job of killin fumes.I DO need ta set up a space heater when it winter, caz it's too cold to paint at 68. Jus think of how you'd like it,imagine your own little world/paradise, an GO FER IT!!!! Oh, an make sure you can install a DOOR at some time, caz your GONNA need one!(with a lock!)
Cornpatch Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 Hi Eelco----got to agree with Geoge53 here, if you live in a cold climent be sure to insulate, and not just your hobby room but the whole basement, and with kids around your going to need a door with a lock, and some kind of ventalation. When we bought our house and remodeled the basement we did it so that the whole family would be able to use it. I dont know how big your basement is but we divided ours up so that we had a laundry room, a storage room and a good size hobby room and family room. For us it worked out really good, we use the basement more than the upstairs. One thing you might want to consider when your in the planning stage, is a 1/2 bath in the basement. I finally had to put one in a couple of years ago. These old legs got tired of running upstairs and across the house to go potty. Once you get your hobby room (man-cave) built in the basement you'll wonder why you didnt do it sooner. Nothing better than going down there doing your building, when your done you turn off the light, lock the door and when you come back everything will be right as you left it. Jeff
diymirage Posted July 24, 2009 Author Posted July 24, 2009 well, i picked my room (there are only two rooms in the basement that are an option, and the other in is build as a gym (yeah, like im ever gonna use that) so it will he the other room not only does it need a door it doesnt have drywalls yet
