Build Up Boy Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 Anyone out there know of anybody or anyway to chrome a pair of 1/25 rear wheels for my pro-stock car? They are already painted with "chrome" paint and look OK but not what I'm really after. These are unusual wheels off of a REVELL diecast pro-stock car and I'd like to keep them. THANKS Marty
Build Up Boy Posted July 21, 2009 Author Posted July 21, 2009 If the paint isn't doing it for ya, [dosen't for me either usually] and you want them replated you're gonna have to send them off to ChromeTech or one of the other plating companys that replate model parts. I bet there will be a bunch of people here who will tell you to paint it with alclad and that it looks just as good or even better but for me only chrome plating looks like chrome plating. STEVE- Thanks for the reply. I'm old, what is alclad and where does one get it. If the cost isn't too bad I could try it on some junk wheels to check the finsih. Marty
Harry P. Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 http://www.ehobbies.com/alc5114.html It's not exactly the same look as chrome plated parts, but it's close... and much cheaper.
Build Up Boy Posted July 21, 2009 Author Posted July 21, 2009 HARRY- How does this product compare to lets say "DUPICOLOR" automotive chrome paint? Any experiance with either product? Marty
envious8420 Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 (edited) ive used both and compared, if you decant the dupli color and spray it thru and airbrush over a black enamal base (same way you do alclad) the results are almost exactly the same . both give a high polish aluminium look, not exactly chrome but close. 59 Impala Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 I use Alclad for the chrome. I like the results plus I can't afford the plating and shipping cost. Here is a pic of the grill and bumper on my 63 Impala that I restored. I really like Alclad, plus, it's alot cheaper than replating. Dan
Build Up Boy Posted July 22, 2009 Author Posted July 22, 2009 Steve & Dan- Looks good, think I'll give it a try. Marty
59 Impala Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Here's a tip one of the guys in our club gave me when using Alclad. Use between 12 and 15 pounds of air when spraying. You get less dry spray and it comes out better. I tried it and it does seem to come out better and you use less paint. Hope this helps. Dan
Chuck Most Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 I bet there will be a bunch of people here who will tell you to paint it with alclad and that it looks just as good or even better but for me only chrome plating looks like chrome plating. I've heard much ballyhoo over the Alclad stuff, but really, I don't think it looks a whole heck of a lot better than that "Instant Chrome" rattle can stuff you get at the auto parts store.
