Rick Schmidt Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 Think I need to get this truck into its own topic now. As most of you know I bought it, a Peterbilt and a trailer last week. I decided to tear the International down and redo it. Dave Bates was kind enough to supply me with the sleeper that goes to the kit Which tho it seems many don't have one I think they look better that way. Not too sure the direction I'm going with this yet so at the moment I'm just pulling the truck apart. It's coming apart fairly well and with very minimal damage. First thing I did was remove the extra axle. It wasn't a large truck part was a part to the AMT 55 chevy pickup. No big there I needed a new front end for that kit Not sure how far I'll go on the frame it seems decently built to me just needs a good cleanup
Rick Schmidt Posted September 21, 2009 Author Posted September 21, 2009 Doing some test fitting today. seems the 3406 from the Pete fits into the International with minimal mods gotta figure out the routing for the intake tho
mackinac359 Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 There used to be a 4300 with a big Cat with a double sleeper and long wheelbase that used to hit the truck show circuit for quite some time. I haven't seen it in about 4 years. It was quite nice. Tim
Murphy's Law Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 A slight stretch on the frame and that would be a nice old school wrecker...
Old Albion Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Rick, I had a check on the internet this morning before I went to work. I found a web site called: HeavyTruckParts.Net They have an International 4300 for sale on the web site. It has some photo's showing the Cat 1693T engine. http://www.heavytruckparts.net/detailview....archnum=3214392 Pipe work for the Air cleaner to the compressor on the turbo charger will be pretty easy. You must allow plenty of flexibility because the engine, frame and cab will move considerably when the truck is being used. Make sure you use a suitable size tube (plastic tube etc in our case and where you need a bend use The ribbed rubber intake elbow hoses. Check Sourkrauts web site look under engines. Some are resin some are rubber material. I like the resin ones, but your choice. http://sourkrautsmodeltrucks.com/?page_id=...p;page_number=3 Hope this helps Best Wishes Dave
Rick Schmidt Posted September 22, 2009 Author Posted September 22, 2009 Dave thanks for the link Its been stashed in the favorites folder pertaining to this rig. It gives me some reference on what I need to do to make the swap. The more I work on it the more I like the idea of the Cat in there. I've hit a spot tho. Instructions to the Pete say the engine is tan, guy at work says he's not sure he's ever seen a tan Cat. He said most Cats he ever seen were Cat Yellow, Which make sense to me cause yellow is the color that comes to my mind with Caterpilar.
Old Albion Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Rick, Engine colours have been a subject we have discussed in detail on numerous occassions. I think Aaron had a sort of chart that he was working on. Maybe if he's reading this he could post the link. Peterbilt in the 70s and 80s painted all suppliers engines white. Tim will clarify the details. Peterbilt engines were probably only painted in the engine manufacturers colours if they were overhauled at a later date by the engine manufacturer. But for International I'm not sure what their prefered engine colour would be. If indeed they had one. If you paint the Kitty Cat yellow you will be OK though. Just say it has had a major overhaul at the Cat dealers and they painted it their yellow. Hope this makes sense. Best Wishes Dave
Rick Schmidt Posted September 22, 2009 Author Posted September 22, 2009 Dave it does make sense. Knowing what ya just told me and the fact that this is a kit of a tractor thats 30 years old a rebuild wouldn't be far fetched. I'll be gettin me some Cat yellow for it thanks
mistermodel Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Cats were allmost nonexistant in internationals.Yes, a rebuild probably would be yellow and the fact that a 4300 would have more likley had a cat retro fitted ,or maybe sold as a glider kit, yellow would work.If it was factory fitted it would have been red.You can do what you want ,because anything goes after it leaves the factory.I just don't know why you didn't leave it the way it was???????? KEVIN

cargostar Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 I'd leave the Cat yellow. IH painted EVERYTHING red in the '70s.... Cat, D.Diesel, Cummins, IH, all red. The yellow will stand out under the hood and contrast against whatever color you paint the cab. I wouldn't worry about changing it, its yours, and you can build how you like. It did look like a decent build, but, if you want to change it, change it. Remember the main thing is to have fun and enjoy what you are doing. It is to be re-released in the near future, so, everyone else can build their own versions.

Yes Like ya say it was decent done, but not to my preference. the man I bought it from assumed it'd be scrapped his ad even said that. So I think it's still getting a better fate than expected. What some folks don't see is the missing parts on it. Some bit to the International Engine was awol and the nose was glued closed. Instead of figuring out whats missing and finding it I decided to go the route of a new engine. This means I can open the nose back up like it should be. For the folks who think I need a drop axle day cab hauler for that lowboy just wait I have plans for that Blue Peterbilt that does not involve a 55 Chevy front axle for a drop axle hehe
