Thanks guys. Here is some info on the real car and why I thought it was such a great subject for a build even with a lame Gunze kit.

"In 1976, Charlie Kemp built a Mustang II racing car for the IMSA All American GT (AAGT) class. He looked at the rules carefully and decided that he could get away with taking the body panels for a Mustang II and draping them over a tube-frame racing chassis. The common method of building a racer in this class had previously been to take a production vehicle and add the tube frame reinforcement to it. Kemp's method did away with the design compromises inherent in the more common practice.

Unfortunately, the IMSA inspectors did not share his liberal interpretation of the rules and placed him in the Le Mans GTX (GT Experimental) class. Eventually he was able to modify his Cobra II racer to satisfy the IMSA inspectors.

Kemp also intended to sell production Mustang II's wearing his fiberglass body panels in cooperation with his sponsor, Dobbs Ford in Memphis Tennessee. The cars were to have performance upgrades limited to suspension improvements (a sign of the very restrictive emission regulations of the period). I have been unable to determine if any of these production cars were built, or if the body panels were available as a kit."

On my build I used a scrap piece of P/E for the lower grill, I drilled out all of the air holes in the back of the car, cut the spoiler out on the trunk with a very thin saw, and of course used all of my Alclad colors as much as possible. I would like to point out that the kit come with no chrome at all so the chrome you see is Alclad or BMF.

This is an awesome build of this curbside!

It prompted me to do a bit of research for a possible conversion to a full detail since I have the kit and am on the lookout for my next high detail car. What puzzled me is the rear end. The front appears to be of one version and the rear of another... Anyone else come to that conclusion? I hadn't found any pictures that matched the configuration of the model.

3men2s: How close is the '86 IMSA Mustang chassis to the Kemp chassis?

I think that this chassie is a great platform and off course

it needs to be modify more, This are pics of someone else

build, sorry I don't have his name. but he did a great job combining

both kits. I will push the engine back more, will see when I am ready to start.

around what time you think you will start yours, maybe we can start at the same time and

help each other along the way.

You can see in the pics both the differences in the cage as well as the rear bumper area having more of a stock type facia. I think this will be like any racer in where you would need to pick a date and/or race to model the car after as it is clear that it has gone through some changes. I like the idea of getting a head start with a chassis from another kit. Did I read he was racing a 351 cleveland?

It would be fun to work on a project simultaniously as it would be bennificial. Lots of sharing of tips, tricks, sources and ideas... But, I believe my next project will be an extreeme detailed Corvette GS.

The induction for the motor was fuel injection. You picked the correct kit for the chassis basis though!.
