thomas LB808 Labanon Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 if i can find an FD3S mazda RX-7 that actually has the fully detailed rotory motor, then count me in. i THINK tamiya makes one. Not entirely sure though. It's the RX-7 R1 Tamiya Item#: 24116 This should only put me in two build-offs. This and the street trucks. p.s. anybody able to tell me where i can find "upgraded" turbos? from a semi-truck model or something maybe? i found this last week. Hope it HELPS.
shucky Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 The Tamiya RX7 R1 kit is pretty nice. It does feature a rotary that can be built up to your likings. Here is the engine from that kit with scratchbuilt turbo, exhaust mani, fuel sys, ignition, pulley sys, etc.
shucky Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 And if you dont want to scratchbuild turbo's you can order from "thepartsbox" .. they have some resin items that may interest you. Good luck!
BKIN10SECS Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Shucky that is one sweet looking motor. May I ask you a few questions...did you machine your pulleys? Your hose couplings, is it just paint over the tubing and if so what color and paint are you using. And lastly what and how do you get those very realistic looking clamps. Thanks for any info you can provide .
shucky Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 Hi, thanks for the compliments. The pulleys are from Model Car Garage I believe. Just some old ones I had laying around. The hose couplings are aluminum tubing painted with Tamiya light blue. I find the Tamiya red, black, and light blue look closest to the 1:1 couplings colors. The hose clamps are simple... it is thin strips of BMF with tiny flat cut sections of beading wire epoxy'd in place. Beading wire can be found at most craft stores.
BKIN10SECS Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 Thanks buddy....well I will be looking for the 13 b out of the Tamiya kit, I tried The Parts Box....but their website seems to be down....hey you wouldn't want to sell the one you have posted do you I'm serious Thanks
wgflatliner Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 thanks for the tips on the turbo i'd like to see more detailed pics of the motor, like the back of it, and where the spark plug wires go, etc, if you could please
shucky Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 Hi, I used some reference pics of 1:1 for the rotary since this is the first and only one I've done so far. The back of the engine is completely flat because the trans is mostly molded to the Tamiya chassis. Kinda good because you can use any trans you want and install it in a variety of different cars. Here are some addt'l pics of the side of the engine where the plug wires, etc go. I made 2 ignition modules from styrene (painted flat black) and small tubing. You can see them in the pics. Hope this helps. I dont think I could sell the engine because I have so much time in it. On to the pics ...
wgflatliner Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 thank you for posting the pics. so - i have to find the model and hope it gets here in a decent amount of time. hong kong is kinda far away ya know. but i may just splurge and get it anyways.
wgflatliner Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 curse me for being a compulsive buyer. i splurged. 32 bucks later.
wgflatliner Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 as far as building a rotary drag car, check out this BMW 3-series with a 26b 4-rotor powered drag car. http://www.mazdarotary.net/queenstbmw.htm

wgflatliner Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 question for shucky: how do you bond aluminum to aluminum? what type of glue/epoxy?
shucky Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 Devcon 5 minute epoxy. Could not build w/out it. Great stuff.
made007 Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 Could you post pics when it is done. Thanks yeah, i couldnt find a transmision, so i guess im just gona do the engine
Terror Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 I have a couple questions.1:Does it have to have a tuner motor?2:Is this build off for people with no cameras?LOL, I don't see any progress pics at all!

wgflatliner Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 well i'm still waiting for my RX-7 to show up in the mail. once i get it i'll be getting some photos up. priority is the street truck, which i guess could technically be an import drag racer, but i'll keep them separate to keep me motivated. hehe.. i do have some ideas: this is the FD3S car with the 13b motor. custom engine parts, upgraded turbo, custom exhaust manifold and turbo routing, etc tubbing the rear slicks n skinnies wheelie bar parachute roll cage no side mirrors (less aerodynamic drag) custom rear spoiler, drag style.. i anticipate this build for sure!
jhuntsman Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 ive gotten the motor out of the chevy drag car mocked up and i have to make some motor mounts for the front. i havent had a lot of time to work on this project due to the recent birth of our first child.... but im getting a little bit done here and there. hopefully i can work on it some more here in the near future.
