belowambient Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 (edited) I wanted to make this a Coronet 500 since I used to have one, but nonetheless it is my return to modeling after 20 yrs... plans call for NHRA ST class in the eliminator category which means it should run high 11's with nothing more than some inconspicuous mods and 9in slicks.... im still waiting on the headers but in the meantime I picked up a distributor kit, and painted the body Tamiya red (#26 i believe) I wish I could get my camera to capture the correct color, but it has a very complicated menu...lol. belowambient Posted October 31, 2009 Author Posted October 31, 2009 (edited) Keep in mind this is a budget build, and I want to avoid P/E parts, so I will try and do as much detail as my painting allows... for now I figured it was cheaper to grab a distributor kit rather than bludgeoning around for some needle and thread, hot candle, etc.. like I used to do... my how things have changed!! I opened up the valve covers with a 1/16in drill bit... The 'parts by park' distributor kit has slide on boots that make the hemi plug boots stand out quite a bit A bit of paint touch up and it should be good to go.. I may end up doing some plumbing later and adding a carb linkage, but with the air cleaner hiding most of it it seems kind of a waste... I'll have to think about it... BigGary Posted November 1, 2009 Posted November 1, 2009 Keep in mind this is a budget build, and I want to avoid P/E parts, so I will try and do as much detail as my painting allows... for now I figured it was cheaper to grab a distributor kit rather than bludgeoning around for some needle and thread, hot candle, etc.. like I used to do... my how things have changed!! I apologize for my crappy camera... I figure if you can ignore the pixels its all good! It looks like you are off to a good start here. The hemi looks good too. Do you have the correct 66-67 scoop? Let me know, I have 2 if you need one. Most of those cars back in '67 ran Crager S/S or American Torque Thrust wheels and 10†slicks. I'll be watching this one. Gary
belowambient Posted November 1, 2009 Author Posted November 1, 2009 (edited) thanks for the kind words... I plan on running the biggest tire I can get in the fender, and so far I have had some amount of success with some tires that i bought... I think they are 9x30's... I took some more pictures so I can get some idea on the stance... I'm thinking at this point the back needs to come up a tad so It has the proper mopar w/ pinion snubber angle of around 8 degrees of rake... the hood is the one that comes with the revell kit, so I'm not sure if its accurate or not... More touching up to follow... thanks for looking! Edited November 1, 2009 by belowambient
belowambient Posted November 2, 2009 Author Posted November 2, 2009 spent most of the day touching up this and that... finished the trim!
belowambient Posted November 3, 2009 Author Posted November 3, 2009 Spent most of the day detailing and gaining a steady hand... I managed to do everything I could without any tape, just a cheap brush that I cut some bristles off of... Hopefully I can finish this thing this week and get started on the Ferrari 365 I want to get started on... I may just go back to this one once I find some centerline rims, and the proper Dana 60 rear... I'm also thinking of some b1 heads, with a pro shot fogger, and a back-halved rear.... Nonetheless, I'm going to stick with the Street Eliminator theme and call this a high 11 second car...
Space Cowboy Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 It's taking shape fast. I like the color and your doing a great job on detail..
mookie Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 I had a coronet, I completely shaved and cut the roof off, but my two year old nephew got it when i was gone, you can imagine the rest.
belowambient Posted November 3, 2009 Author Posted November 3, 2009 (edited) just finished the 4 pt cage... i wish i had some putty since i didn't realize that trees change gauge.. after the windows are installed im hoping i can't see it... Edited November 3, 2009 by belowambient
belowambient Posted November 3, 2009 Author Posted November 3, 2009 It's taking shape fast. I like the color and your doing a great job on detail.. that means a lot... ill try and work on it tomorow, but chances are it won't be until next week when i finish...
caine440 Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 Your doing a great Job! Looking at your build has really been a big help as I am working on a Landy Super Stock version of this Coronet now. Your hand is a lot steadier then mine as your detailing looks darn good. Well done and thanks for posting.
belowambient Posted November 4, 2009 Author Posted November 4, 2009 Your doing a great Job! Looking at your build has really been a big help as I am working on a Landy Super Stock version of this Coronet now. Your hand is a lot steadier then mine as your detailing looks darn good. Well done and thanks for posting. thank you for the compliments... i look forward to seeing your build! the only real trick i have is to modify a brush... then i just barely dip it in the paint, and sometimes ill thin it out, especially for chrome.. i would say my detail brush has probably 5 hairs on it... it makes things really easy... i just take my time and try not to get in a hurry and dip it in too much paint... it takes a lot of practice, but im quite sure anyone can do it.... i shake like crazy!
belowambient Posted November 4, 2009 Author Posted November 4, 2009 below ambient, YGM Gary thank you gary... i also want to thank Lee for donating a set of HEMI headers that are gonna make this thing look really nice when its done... i'll try and do some work on it tonight, buts its getting late and i have the day off tomorrow... i think i may add two door bars to the homemade cage, and maybe raise the back up a tad... I don't recall having this kind of enthusiasm for a build, and i owe a lot of that to the outstanding members of this forum!! thanks go out to all!!
belowambient Posted November 6, 2009 Author Posted November 6, 2009 (edited) Sorry for not updating sooner... I got carried away with the need to finish this, so I went crazy with gluing and touching up... unfortunately I managed to ruin my window trim in the process, but nothing a bit more paint can't fix... I installed the shifter without the console, since I knew any drag car isn't going to have a lump of chrome between the seats... I probably should have left the windshield wiper motor out, but there would have been a big hole there, plus those rainy eastern tracks wipers can come in handy... Headers are painted with a slight mix of black and chrome to accent the piping... I also drilled the collectors out and painted the inside flat black... If there is one thing I know its that Hemi's use A LOT OF GAS! lol The rubber band came in handy to glue everything together and let stand overnight... I was appalled at the fit of this model... so much sanding, bending, melting, and trimming were necessary to keep the thing solid and accurate... one more reason why good kits are expensive! more chassis pics that's all for now.. ill try and get at it again asap.... thanks for looking! whale392 Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 My dad has a 66' Coronet500 Hemicar, and I love that car. This build reminds me of his car. Doing a great job with the build, but I notice that the steering wheel is in upside down. I am also converting a 67' Plymouth GTX into a model of his 66' Plymouth BelvedereII Hemicar. I like the scratchbuilding involved in converting a car to a similar vehicle.
caine440 Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 Looks Great What were your major fitting issues? Just tried to fit the one I am working on and had a heck of a time just getting the chassis in the body even without any interior parts installed. I am defiantly worried about messing up the body during final assembly. Thanks
belowambient Posted November 7, 2009 Author Posted November 7, 2009 (edited) well nothing i can do about the steering wheel now... this model has so much glue i'll probably damage something trying to correct anything.. As far as fitment goes, the rearend, the interior, glass, and chassis were all way off, especially where the front meets the firewall... I found that if everything I glued together strong enough to hold yet wet enough to move, well i just kind of pushed everything together, threw a rubberband on it and let it cure overnight... its still very far from acceptable, but some glue, and touch-ups will help it be more complete... I think the biggest factor was the paint that i had to sand down to get proper cement curing... I think it'll turn out ok, I just think the model was made more complicated than it should have been... for example, the firewall cannot clearly be installed correctly until the point its ready to be cured with the chassis and body... the instructions tell you otherwise... belowambient Posted November 8, 2009 Author Posted November 8, 2009 (edited) decided to work on the kit a bit tonight by removing the battery and heater hoses... the battery is obviously gonna go in the truck, and i have to many others kits i want to work on to open up the truck.. I've never had too much skills when it comes to opening panels, but i'll add it to my list of things to do I wasn't sure on what to do about the windshield wiper motor and then i had an idea after i found the adhesive foil from the parks distributor kit... I used to go to the mopar nationals religiously in woodburn, and recaled all the mopars that were semi-budget with dulled up tin-foil and whatnot... I quickly cut-up some foil and threw it up on the firewall to cover up the hole.... Problem Solved! Theres still a lot of work to do! Edited November 8, 2009 by belowambient
caine440 Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Looks really good. How did you handle the tail lights? I am not happy with the way mine turned out. Thanks!
