Well, everyone in the modeling community has been eagerly waiting on the edge of their seats for updates on the brilliant and highly informative tutorial that Mr. Obsessive is doing. This is an excellent reference piece that I found that I am sure will come in handy. The link is from the Late C.J.Hilton's website. It is a step by step instructional on chopping the top on a 49 Mercury, but it would be applicable to any car with a similar body style.

Enjoy! and I hope you find this useful!

On the subject of chopping these Mercury's what is the best option for an experienced modeler? Buying Revells pre-chopped version or the AMT kit and do it yourself.

How accurate do they compare to each other and a 1-1 car?

I plan on duplicating Louis Bettancourts Ayala built car and maybe Sam Barris's as well

I also see Revell has gone back to the old style box now with everything jammed into it .

Hot Rod, in my personal opinion, I believe the AMT Mercury is the better choice when replicating some of the famous customs of yesteryear. I say this because the AMT gives you a stock height Mercury which allows you to chop the top as much as you desire. Also, I have seen it stated on this forum that the AMT Mercury is more accurate than the Revell version.

I cannot speak about the Revell accuracy because I just don't know... But The AMT is obviously the best base to start a custom. The revell Merc is nice, but definately not a good stock option to start with. I want to build the Sam Barris Merc too John! I have the issue of Rodder's Journal with tons of pictures in it if you need any!
