Hot_Rod_Bob Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 What does NNL stand for. I have nevwer been to a model contest, and was just curious. Thanks
Gregg Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 Well, that's going to open the jokesters around here Tim Boyd did an article in MCM a little while back. Nameless National Luminaries Or was it National Nameless Luminaries I will try to find the story and issue it was in . It is basically a show that is for the people, by the people. No judging, just people's choice. The less awards, the better, in my humble opinion.....

Doesn't Luminary have something to do with casting light? Sorry for the rookie question.
bob paeth Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 In this case the word "luminary" was a euphimism for "bright" or "star". You might consider the terminology sorta tongue in cheek. Gregg, If i remember the terminology NNL was coined in Toledo by the local club there. Also, if I am correct the initials stand for Nameless National Luminaries. By the way Gregg ....................."humble opinion" ? LOL Bob
Steve H. Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 The luminary part stood for the builders that kept the hobby going thru the dark ages (the 1980's).
Hot_Rod_Bob Posted December 8, 2006 Author Posted December 8, 2006 So would this meen that anyone who is involved with building models would be considered a Luminary ?? Kind of an interesting way to come up with a name.
62rebel Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 it's nice to think of ourselves as visionaries.... i like it. i've long felt that anyone could buy prepainted preassembled diecast and collect models but it took craftsmen to build them from bits and pieces. to see work like that of bob paeth or bud anderson or juha ario (sp?) is to see art, imho.
bob paeth Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 At the risk of protesting too much, I think that putting me in the same group as Budd Anderson, Ario, Augie and a host of others is giving me more credit that I deserve. My main contribution to our hobby has been in the promotion of it. Many of my models show imagination but when it comes down to execution of those ideas, I'm the one who should be executed ( OK people, stand back ........................one at a time ........... and only one shot per person. Bob
Lyle Willits Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 Here's the short version - In the early 80's, Mark Gustavson had the idea of having an international, top drawer, model car contest. He invited most of the "big name" car modellers in the hobby to participate. He only recieved 2 or 3 replies. Rather angry at such a poor response, he wrote an article in Scale Auto complaining about the national luminaries in the hobby, who shall remain nameless. About a year later, a few of those "big names" gathered in a builder's garage, in Ohio, just to display their work and enjoy each other's company. It wasn't a contest - just a gathering of friends who built car models. With tongue-in-cheek, they called themselves national nameless luminaries. From that humble begining, we now have several non-competetive NNL's around the country. The original "national" NNL is still held in Ohio each October. They just celebrated their 26th year with approximately 1000 models on display. The biggest NNL is NNL EAST, held in March. This past March they had 1853 models and over 1000 people in attendance.
Rick Forrester Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 Thank's Lyle, for the story about N.N.L. as a member of the group that puts it on every year. I have to tell the story. And you did just find. I think most of you who come to Toledo know who I am. Rick Forrester [PAPAFO]
Guest zebm1 Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 I was gonna say that it started with Mark Gustavson, he's a lawyer right?
