coleman9219 Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 can someone tell me how to and what to use to weld plastic together...could i melt it together?? im trying to make my own custom frame for a model.......please help me!!!
coleman9219 Posted January 28, 2010 Author Posted January 28, 2010 Liquid cements chemically "weld" styrene together by melting it, if that's what you mean. Obviously there are all sorts of adhesives that will work. If your question is how to make things look as if the parts had been welded, there are many techniques for that too. Is that what you're trying to do? no no no im trying to "weld" the plastic holding parts of a tree together to make a frame here ill show you a pic of one somebody didhttp://www.minitruckinweb.com/webonly/102709mt_scale_model_build_contest_round_3_summary/photo_69.html just go to this link there should be more pic to click on at the bottom of the page
coleman9219 Posted January 29, 2010 Author Posted January 29, 2010 i wouldn't use kit sprue to make a frame but i've seen people doing that before. if you want to make your own frame i'd suggest picking up some Evergreen styrene in the shapes that you want and a bottle of Tenax7R. the Tenax is a liquid cement that "welds" styrene plastic together and if you have nice joints it's very strong. i couldn't get the link you provided to work but it did notice the minitruck in part of the title. is this the type of frame you are interested in making? Dave O YEA!! you know how to make a minitruck frame? because they are having a model build and i am doing the best i can for this one and i need to know how to make a frame and i live in the middle of nowhere so i have no hobby shops near me the closest thing is magic mart LOL
tabsscale1 Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 can someone tell me how to and what to use to weld plastic together...could i melt it together?? im trying to make my own custom frame for a model.......please help me!!! I like using Ambroid pro weld for this. As someone has said you can put metal rods in the plastic but instead of using Super Glue i use the Pro weld takes a little bit longer to dry but the stuf melts the plastic together and you don't have a brittle joint. Some one also said to use Tenax I think the Pro weld is 10 time the glue tenax is. every Bottle of Tenax i ever bought was thrown away as It didn't perform lie the proweld. If I had to make a choice of glues and all the choices i had were either Testor tube glue and Tenax i would use the Testors.
Smart-Resins Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 I would suggest going online and buying some styrene. That way it is uniform shape and size! >80 equals 2" in 1/25 and .125 equals 3" in 1/25. I used to use tenax 7r, but have found that ambroid pro weld works just as well and you get a slight bit more glue for slightly less. it is available more places and it does not evaporate as much if you tend to leave the top off. I use it on all of my kustom frame work when I do one! Jody
GrandpaMcGurk Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Coleman, if you'll give me a day or two to dig through my archives I'll gather up some pics of a couple of 1/6th projects I worked on welding plastic. Yes it can be done but requires a bit of a learning curve. I've even butt welded plastic sheet using NO filler or adhesives. This method is great in that the pieces joined together are totally plastic and sand at the same rate. I'm able to radically section large bodies that would be virtually impossible without a lot of additional bracing. Anyway, if I can't find the pics I'm looking for I'll link you to another site where I did in progress shots and text explaining the way I do it.
disabled modeler Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 I have heard of using acetone to bond or melt plastics together before but cant remember what types of plastics...Mark
