j_in_larryville Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 First let me start by thanking you all for your painting tips, they were very useful. So I have moved on to a '70 boss 429 and want to shave the ugly side markers off. I went to Hobby Lobby and bought what I think was the correct stuff to fill and smooth the areas where the lights will be sanded off, it is a sandind filler I believe it was called, as Im sitting at work I cant recall the exact name. Is the correct method of doing this? I sanded the area flat and filled the indentations left fron the markers with the filler and will keep doing so in small layers until I get the body line correct. I am using a finish grade sandpaper to smooth out and will use a 1200 grit to do final finish. I am planning on painting a 3 color scheme with the main body being pearl blue, with the centerline of the car being a nice silver and having black rockers, rear spoiler and chin spoiler. Any tips and tricks will be much appriciated.
Jason Vandergriff Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Jason, Take and sand the markers flush then apply a thin coat of the filler putty you bought. Sand it back down with 220 wet dry then reapply filler as needed. Once you got it close sand the are smooth with 400 and 600 grits. Dont forget to prime the area after you get it close cause it can show any imperfections you may need to correct. As for your paint design Apply the silver base first. Not only will this allow you to mask off your stripe first it will also make the blue a touch more vibrant. Mask the rest of the body and spray your black. Cant wait to see how it turns out for you.
MikeMc Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 after shaving emblems etc.paint a thin coat of liquid cement over it, let dry do 1 more time. Now a thin coat of filler or thick primer over it , let dry and then block it out...no ghosting!!
Railfreak78 Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Mike does that work for hoods that have the cut out area on the bottom that always shows on the top after paint?
Jason Vandergriff Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Mike does that work for hoods that have the cut out area on the bottom that always shows on the top after paint? It does to a degree what really helps is filling in the area with small rod and your glue of choice then do the top side.
Junkman Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 It does to a degree what really helps is filling in the area with small rod and your glue of choice then do the top side. Can you please elaborate on 'do the topside'? Do what?
Jason Vandergriff Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Brush a light coat of liquid cement around the grove that shows through the top. after you fill the bottom. What this does is erases the plastics memory preventing it from showing up after paint. I apologize for not be clear in my last post.
Junkman Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 I cannot thank you enough. You just told me the solution to a problem I had the past 35 odd years.
Railfreak78 Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 I'm glad I asked about that then Junkman and thanks Jason I painted my Superbee 4 coats on the hood and you could see the stupid out line for a cut hood I was so mad. Thanks bud.
j_in_larryville Posted February 10, 2010 Author Posted February 10, 2010 Just wanted to add a little clairity to my original post. The stuff I bought was sanding sealer, the person working at hobby lobby said it will work for filling in the gaps and all that. Did I get the right stuff? Also, I did the tip on putting a dab of glue in the indentation from the side marker and it worked great!
MrObsessive Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Hi Jason, I started a thread about basic model building, and I focused on sanding and getting rid of ghosting--------------if you click here, it'll take you to the original thread of what you're dealing with. I haven't added anything to it of late due to burnout, but because of all the crazy snow we've had lately, it's lit a fire under me to get working on it again. Hope it helps!
