oversteer Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 I want to do my first car this summer but I need to get a spray booth but held out because they are expensive. Can someone recommend one with an exhaust fan? Thanks Rich
diymirage Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 check out this page http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5964&st=0&p=41725&hl=spraybooth&fromsearch=1&#entry41725 there is a plan halfway down the first page if you are handy you can build one yourself for maybe 50 bucks in parts
crazyjim Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 I was going to buy a Pace unit until I saw the price. I then printed the page(s) with the measurements and bought my own from plywood and used a bathroom exhaust fan. I have since cut a 4" hole in a wall for the vent and added a 3 gallon air compressor. I'm kinda/sorta in change mode again. As soon as our pool is done, I'm planning a major change. I'd like to be able to get the buggy out without having to move the spray booth.
oversteer Posted March 17, 2010 Author Posted March 17, 2010 Thanks guys my cousin said he will build one for me with my help.(We can build a big one)I was wondering about the bathroom fan;would it be so powerful that it wouldn't allow the paint to reach the subject????I know thats a weird thought....Also I'm gonna need a respirator, any particular brands? Thanks fellas.
Scott - Elm City Hobbies Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Bathroom fan works fine, and is not too "powerful". If you are doing a rear draft, or bottom draft, your paint has to pass the subject long before it gets into the airstream, so you should be safe. Go with a 100cfm or more bathroom fan to give you good suction. Tip that I learned from building my own. Where your wood panels come together. Seal the inside seams with some bathroom or kitchen silicon and it will seal you booth up, and allow to fan to give you better suction.
crazyjim Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 I'd stay away from silicone caulk. Sometimes it reacts with paint and causes fisheye.

Regular open motor type Bathroom & Hood fans are NOT safe for paint booth use. Get a fan that has the motor outside of the air flow. AzTom
