I have been reading these articles on masking with Silly Putty but I have yet to read what is done with the putty after paint has been sprayed on it? Do you throw that piece out and buy more or can it be reused over and over?

Anyone have pics of masking with silly putty? I ask because I'm not picturing in my mind how you would use it. I'm glad this topic is here as I just talked with my daughter last night about trying silly putty or playdo to make the tongue hanging out of the exhaust on my Jarius Art project. If the paint sticks thats cool or does it flake off?

Another substitute for Silly Putty is called Blu Tack. You just knead it until stretchy and then apply it the area of the part you want masked. You can reuse it as well.

Cool, thanks for the replies, guys! Now, my next question, does the Silly Putty leave any residue or oil that must be cleaned before painting the area where it was stuck too?

Ben, I have not ran into that problem. However, Once I have the area painted I let it flash for about 5 minutes, maybe less and pull the putty off. I've yet to have a problem with any residue.

Kneading the putty back together and miraculously the paint on the putty disappears. Not totally mind you, but it does lessen.

The more you use it the more it will retain the paint though, and it depends on how much you may have sprayed on the putty.

I buy mine at Michael's Arts and Crafts. It's about $1.00 or so.
