Modellpularn Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 I'm planning to build the Auto World XLR McLaren M8B. I have the Accurate Miniatures kit, and decals from Fisher. But what was the correct color of the car? I've seen orange, and in an old issue of Car Model, Hank Borger built the car using the MPC 1/20 scale kit. He mixed up some paint, and it looks more like red. At least the cover photos. I also plan to make it into a slot car.... I mean, it's natural. The decals have the slot track! But what was the color??
Scalefinishes Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 Unless you are looking for a specific car that was painted in sponsor colors, most M8Bs would be Mclaren orange. Jameston
Scalefinishes Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 I knew I had it somewhere! The Mclaren orange is the same color as Renault Chipper orange, OEM paint code 318. I hope that helps, Jameston

Scalefinishes Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 You definitely will be able to get it mixed at your local paint supplier. If you need any help with paint formulas PM me. Jameston
Art Anderson Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 I knew I had it somewhere! The Mclaren orange is the same color as Renault Chipper orange, OEM paint code 318. I hope that helps, Jameston McLaren Orange, as used in their Can-AM and Indy racing days (early to mid 70's) was a unique color, formulated especially for McLaren. No less than Johnny Rutherford gave me a quart of the real stuff from the team garages in Gasoline Alley in 1976, the last year that a McLaren appeared there in team colors (The Hy-Gain Antenna M-16D). The actual paint has almost a color-shifting quality to it, appearing as a bright orangish yellow in direct sunlight, but indoors, or on a cloudy day, it appeared as a darker, almost burnt orange shade. MCW Automotive Finishes down in North Carolina catalogues a matching McLaren Orange in automotive lacquer that is very, very close (my lacquer came from a paint supplier in the UK who supplied Team McLaren). Hope this helps! Art
Modellpularn Posted May 30, 2010 Author Posted May 30, 2010 Thanks for the info guys, but I got the impression the Auto World #54 car was painted a special shade of orange.
