Kaleb Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Im making a truck shorter in the bed so in order to do so I need to shorten the frame...I see the place where they(manufacture) pieced it in...so I cut there to get a smooth cut and putting it in place. What do I need to add the back piece with the rest of the frame?
randx0 Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 drill holes in the frame rails insert small plastic rod and glue together . alternatively you can try cutting a straight cut in the middle of the frame rails and use plastic strips to strengthen (it should look like a plus sign when veiwing from the side)
Alyn Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Go all the way and insert metal rods. Here's an extended frame; same principle. The metal rods are just some chunks snipped out of paperclips.
Kaleb Posted May 10, 2010 Author Posted May 10, 2010 Thanks for the replies, It seems that I need to get another frame lol...i hope not. I will work with it and see what it comes out to be.
59 Impala Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 (edited) I didn't shorten the frame on this truck, I lengthend it,but the same thing could be used to shorten the frame. I'm not sure if this will help but what I did to the frame of this Ford was to cut the frame on an angle and then cut the other side the oppisite direction. This makes a strong joint and not very easy to brake. Here is a picture of what it looks like. Dan Edited May 13, 2010 by 59 Chevy Impala
MikeMc Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 I've streched and shortened my share of frames. The trick in the final work is the simple stuff. Mark it well.....so you know where to cut Measure twice, not me......... I usually do it 3 or 4 times! CUT IT SQUARE.......use your sharpest Zona.......WHY????? SO you can glue it square.......Tenax or bondine will work.....pins on the workbench work for me......nothing moves!!!! Done correctly no pins needed in the frame.....
Kaleb Posted May 13, 2010 Author Posted May 13, 2010 I cut it at the spot where it was bonded from factory. I had melted a couple parts with a blade heated up. I tried the same technique.... completely messed it up. Ive got to buy a plastic sign this weekend to restructure it.. Which I think will work out better because I can get the length and the stance that I want. So it worked out to a plus for me. Thanks for the tips. What should I use in getting these pieces together? Ive used glue it does not work my best is melting it back together, but I dont have a hobby stand to keep it stable. Ive been looking for something like a plastic bond, my father told me to us jb-weld(im still a little iffy on that).
