slant6 Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 I'm helping a friends son with one of his Warhammer models, for those of you who dont know, its a role playing game, thats all I know about it. Any way, he's way to impatient to do any kind of good work and he wants this one to come out better than all his others. This is certainly a break form the norm for me, but its been fun so far. I thought it would be cool to make the fans in the jet engines spin, so I grabbed a couple of 12 volt motor out of a busted CD changer and mounted them inside the housings. Once I got the motors in and tested them, they spun waaaayyy to fast, so I wired some blue 3 volt LED's in series, this way each of the motors and the lights only get 3 volts each, and the motors slow down to a manageable speed. I mounted one light inside the bay and one under the nose as a search/landing light. Well, then we thought it would be fun if it we could hook up and Ipod, and have it play some dramatic war music. So, I pulled apart a set of ear buds and mounted them inside the bay. Forgot to take pictures of it though, but hears one of the headphone jack one the underside of the model. And my last picture. The step that Im hoping someone will be able to help me with. I had to cut out the molded in fans in order to make something that would spin. Im just not quite sure about how to make new ones. I kept the cones from the center, but Im still debating how to put new blades back on them and have them look somewhat realistic. Any Ideas?
MikeMc Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 (edited) Will use whats left. Razor saw on the lines to the center, using a flat or chain nose pliers, twist each blade a small amount. go around a couple of times till your blades all look the same. then make a narrow ring from scrap tube and glue to the rear side with tenax or the like. Mount on a straight pin as the axel.... Edited July 18, 2010 by MikeMc

I agree, it would be great to use some of the parts for an off the wall car build, but a $60 for a new one, cant justify that. I almost dont want to give it back to my friend.

Wagoneer81 Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 (edited) I've played some RPG's in my time... This brings back a few memories! I do like the looks of the ships and vessels of the Warhammer universe. Anxious to see this one finished... Edited July 19, 2010 by Wagoneer81
slant6 Posted July 23, 2010 Author Posted July 23, 2010 I been putting together the base for the past couple of days. Since the motors, as small as they are made the "plane" a little front heavy, it has to be permanently mounted to the base. This turns out to work to my advantage, since I have have run out of space inside the kit to hide the battery box and switch. I made the battery box out of and old car stereo remote, cut it and glued it back together to fit the significantly smaller 12 volt battery. The switch was robbed for a neon light that I cut the cigarette lighter off of to hard-wire into a trunk light. The base wasn't deep enough to hide all these parts, so, I added some depth to it, using some foam packaging from a remote starter box, again salvaged from work. I get a lot of junk from work that goes a long way in modeling. I use one of my girlfriends hair ties to hold it in place so it wouldn't all pull apart. Then I measured and wrapped it in cardboard from a model box. Id like to take a moment to thank Kasie (my girlfriend) for her sacrifice/contribution to this build:). After that I glued the battery box and switch into place, under the base. Hope they hold, keep your fingers crossed. I figured since it has to be permanently attached, I might as well dress up the base a little. So using my limited diorama skills. I added some grass, bushes, tree stumps, and rocks. I even made a little tent out of some camo pant that have been lying around for just such an occasion. Thanks for lookin'!
slant6 Posted July 23, 2010 Author Posted July 23, 2010 (edited) Yeah we do!!! I don't do "other models" to often, but it'd been nice to have dedicated spot to post 'em. I know Im not the only one, and I for one, would love to see other members "other builds". Edited July 23, 2010 by slant6

Doughnut Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 In the past few months, I have picked up a few of the Warhammer 40,000 models. I'm finishing up the Orc Battlewagon right now and it's been a blast. It's good to take a break from the cars for a little bit and focus on my weathering technics. I was very surprised to see just how detailed some of the parts areon the sprues, especially from the two sided parts with no visable mold lines! I believe it'sbecause they use a softer plastic that flows into the molds better. Thanks for posting this.
Romell R Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 (edited) I used to play WarHammer 40K I had a Blood Angels army that was fully detailed and dang near unstoppable. I wish now that I hadnt sold it on ebay. I may get back into it one day, but I think next time I'll build and imperial gaurd army. Edited July 23, 2010 by Aftashox
Scalefinishes Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 We need an "Other Models" area here. Gregg!!! I agree 100%

I like the warhammer kits, but from what I see, they have just found a great way to screw (let me know if "screw" in that context is considered obscene here, I'm not sure) people out of hard earned money, just to play the game. A pencil paper and some dice have always been enough for me. But, to each his own, I suppose. It has been a really fun build though, Im just waiting for a can of Tamiya dull red so I can finish it up, since its a build for a friend, a had him hunt it down and buy it. mageckman Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 It's definately not a cheap hobby! But then again, building models of any kind can be a rather expensive proposition! That Imp Guard flyer is sure lookin good.
