Hello, starting on my workbench design ideas. Not sure what would be a good way to store paints. Cans, bottles, airbrush items all sizes etc. How about tools etc? Any ideas would be great. My actual work area will be about 30-32" deep and 72-80" long. The shelf over top has a 4 tube 48" floresent light in it now. The shelf to the right are 9 feet up. Ceiling slants from 10 feet to 7 feet. Thinking of making a closet to put my compressor in to keep it quiet. Thinking of buying a solid core door at the local Habbitat for Humanity store. Thanks for the input. Hoping to work some on it this weekend if it cools down a bit.

Drew

sorry for the large picture, not sure how to make it smaller?

Yeah those containers Mark uses are great for holding paints and tools in. I use a coffee cup to hold my tools that are the size of pens and pencils, like paint pens, Xacto knifes, drill bits, paint brushes .... ect.

Good luck !!! :D

The ice cream containers just to the right are great for keeping various parts of a project together & usually fit back in the kit box well. The top one holds rubber bands.

:D

I never though of that, I really go through some ice cream (Especially in all this heat we have been having :D ). I might just have to save 'em now, thanks :D

Drew, here is what I use to store my paints in, and it's on wheels so it's also easily transported if need be. It is a Stanley Mobile Work Center, and has a tray in the top and enough storage under the tray for Testors size spray cans, and larger cans in the bottom half.

I got this at Walmart many years ago, mainly since I go to a friend's house quite often for "Model Night" and also when I was still in my former model club for our build nights. The club is no more, but it still rides to the friend's house almost every week, being on wheels makes it very easy! :D Walmart still carries a version of this, but it does not have the lift off top, but has a door on the front instead, and looks like this:

By the way, if you look close at my second pic, you can see the foldable handle in the closed position that unfolds for transport. The newer style also has this same style handle.

Drew, also, here is how I store my tools that I regularly use on my desk, and sorry for my latest project sitting in the way, I'm just too lazy to take a new pic right now! You can see everything, though, so just act like the truck wasn;t even there!

The blue cup is a freebie I got from a neighboring club's contest, and is just an ordinary plastic drinking cup, and I use that for my sanding sticks and files. Next to that is another freebie, my better half's cousin works in a doctor's office, and it is a desk clock organizer that was from drug rep visiting the doctor's office, and I have my hobby knife, sprue cutters, and scissors in it, the there is another one to the right of it filled with pens and Sharpie markers. Finally, the clear tube next to the organizer with the pens is my paint brushes, and guess what, THEY WERE A FREEBIE, TOO!! I won those in a show's kit raffle, and came complete with about 12 or 15 artist's brushes, the blue roll up fabric case, and the clear two piece tube they are in. I've seen similar sets at Michael's for maybe 20 bucks. In front of those, you can't really see these because of the truck, but I have all my paint thinners and glues lined up in front of the storage organizers. You can get a little idea what I mean by looking above the rear tires of the truck, you can see my Model Master glue and Tamiya thinner jars in front of the blue cup. The background of this pic will give you a better idea of the thinner and glue jars.

Behind the paint brushes, you can also see my visor hanging from its nail in the wall. This is my little slice of heaven, and I also use the drawers and shelves of the hutch for storage of my lesser used tools, and also found it makes handy storage for my clamps, too. If you look closely at the far right side of the hutch, you can see my multi colored small clamps going from top to bottom.

My workbench is a wooden commercial door (8ft tall/long). It is supported by a pair of 2-drawer file cabinets. One drawer has hanging files. The files hold my Evergreen strip plastic. First up is plain strips, starting at .010", then it goes to other profiles. One file each for quarter round, round, c-channel, square tubing, round tubing, etc. Put all sizes of each profile in in one file and you'll have plenty of room.

Im checking out doors at lunch. I work for an industrial supply company and there is a Habbitat for Humanity restore about 3 miles away. Thanks for your tip!

I'm happy I could help give you a few ideas, and I forgot to mention, if you notice the pics, I have multicolored dots on the jar lids. They are just small round labels you can get in the office supply section of Walmart, I simply write the paint color on the label and stick it to the jar lid. That way, I don't have to search for whatever paint I'm looking for! Also, the box only takes up a very small amount of floor space, it's about the same as two model boxes sitting side by side.

Don't feel bad about not being in a club, Drew. The club I was a member of disbanded about 5 years ago, but this forum has become my new model club!
