My sister and I were talking telephonically last evening. The conversation drifted into a discussion about a trip that my family took from Iowa to Tulsa Oklahoma back in 1960. As the conversation progressed it was mentioned that the trip took place in August. My memory always placed it at more towards Christmastime, but my sister is older, and should remember that better than me. The son of our hosts had a large (at least to me) model car collection displayed on his wall. I couldn't take my eyes off of it; which I'm sure must have worried him some. At some point the people that we were visiting took us to a Sears store, and there was a model of a 1960 Oldsmobile hardtop purchased for me. I can assure everybody that it probably didn't come out looking like what was shown on the box, but I was still hooked. I guess that's whay I've always had a soft spot for 60 Oldsmobiles.

It's hard to believe that in a few days it will be 50 years since I received that first model, but for me this an important anniversary. I soon will have been building for a full half century. Maybe in another half century I'll finally figure out what I'm doing. Thanks for allowing me to share this with you.

Interesting looking back isn't it?

I'm closing on that 50 year mark myself. I was seven, home with tonsilitis, and built some form of 1/72 scale P51.

I never really stopped, and like you, still don't quite know what the heck I'm doing.

But I'm having fun!

What a cool memory. Thanks for sharing. It makes me remember my first kit. It was a AMT 1940 Ford it was the one that is blue on the box art ( this was around 1984) my Dad came up with how we would build it and did most of the work - bright red, no hood blown Olds motor with sewing thread plug wires and Keystone mags. I thought it was the coolest things ever! I built a couple more 40's after that on my own never came out quite the same. Thanks to e-bay I have bought that same blue AMT 40 Ford kit and will build it as close to that one my Dad and I did in 1984.

Yep! Time sure flys by!

I was in second grade when I got my first model car for Christmas from my teacher. Mrs. Baker!

Funny how I can remember all my teachers names yet forget family members names!laugh.gif

Back to the story though.

Her husband was sales manager at the local Chrysler Plymouth dealer and he supplied disassembled promos for her to give all the boys in the class! I was hooked!

That was around 53 years ago!smile.gif

I, like you am months away from the half century birthdate. Many fond memories of building the very first few with my Dad... Revell VW bus, IMC VW beetle... Where does the time go?!

LOL I'm closing on 50 years of Building!

I have passed the magical mystical five oh a while back and am now certified as a grumpy old fart!
