whale392 Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 Now, I will admit to not knowing Semis that well. I know that there are two different wheel diameters (common anyway). What are they? I ask because I can pick up the 1/32 scale Mack/Tanker kit cheap and was wondering if the 1/32nd scale wheels would spec out to the smaller diameter wheels in 1/24-1/25th scale. Or, if someone sells the smaller diameter wheels/tires I will buy them versus killing a perfectly good kit just for the wheels/tires.
Ben Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 The most common wheels sizes for trucks today is 22.5" and 24.5" The older trucks with split rims were 20" in Dia.(the wheels had a seperate ring that allowed for easier tire installation but were outlawed due to too many injuries when inflating a tire.) Hope this helps?
highway Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 The Mack and trailer, at least from the pic of it on Revell's website, has Alcoa aluminum wheels and would be either the 22.5 or 24.5 wheels that Ben mentioned. These can be used for either the 16 inch wheels on dually pickups or pass for the 19.5 inch wheels used on medium duty trucks like the Ford F550 or GMC Topkick and also the low profile trailer wheels on stepdeck style flatbeds. The 1/32 scale wheels actually scale out at about 17 or 18 inches in 1/24(25) scale. As for aftermarket, Daniel Gailloux, who posts here, has Plaskit resin truck parts and offers 19.5 x 8 inch wheels and tires in his USA catalog. The part number in the catalog is T110 and it comes with 2 front and 4 rear wheels, among other things. These are just 4 hole Budd style wheels like the wheels found in Monogram's old Ford F350 dually kit, not the Alcoas like the Mack. Daniel does not have a website yet, but here is a link to his Photobucket where you can check his work out. Plaskit
whale392 Posted August 27, 2010 Author Posted August 27, 2010 Exactly what I wanted to know; thank you guys!

When I was preparing my resin parts I had a dellima about tire / rim sizes. So the way I ended up preparing my tires and rims was to use the dimensions that are used in platic model kit trucks from AMT. Basically there are 2 sizes of tires: 20 inch and 22 inch. These are molded onto the tire sidewalls. Not sure what size you are looking for or what application you want to use the tires / rims. From the last post there was mention of low profiles tires 19.5 x 8 inch. Low pro tires Actually the tires and rims were prepared for this project. Here is a truck that used the 19.5 x 8 inch set.It is a GMC Topkick with a 20 ft NRC roll back platform. Topkick roll back If you would like more information you can contact me off board at: plaskit_resin@yahoo.ca Hope this helps. Best regards Daniel Gailloux
whale392 Posted September 1, 2010 Author Posted September 1, 2010 Thanks for the replies. I was wanting to do a drop-deck 48' or a double-drop 53' trailer.
highway Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 Thanks for the replies. I was wanting to do a drop-deck 48' or a double-drop 53' trailer. Well, Bradley, the 19.5 wheels would be what you would find on a drop deck, also called a step deck, like this one. The double drop, though, would use the standard larger diameter wheels like the older 20 inchers, the 22.5, or 24.5 wheels, like in these pictures from Hank's Truck Pictures. I even found model truck pics there! I know must of us here in the Truck Section know these sites, but Bradley admitted he doesn't know trucks very well, so these will help fix that. Bradley, these are two sites very valuable to us little big riggers! Hank's Truck Pictures, which is where I found all the pics in this post: http://www.hankstruckpictures.com/trucks.htm And of course I can't leave out our (and Model Cars Trucker's Corner) very own Tim Ahlborn (mackinac359) and his great site: http://timstrucks.site.aplus.net/tim.htm
whale392 Posted September 2, 2010 Author Posted September 2, 2010 Matt, Many thanks for your info and site links! I will be using them soon (saying that I might actually get back to work on the KW W900A I started HOW long ago? ). I have to finish the 62 Buick, the 1991 Mustang GT, and at least the Levin before I can continue with the KW.

I have to finish the 62 Buick, the 1991 Mustang GT, and at least the Levin before I can continue with the KW. You're very welcome, and I know it's been a LOOOOOONG time since I seen anything on your W900! Of course, I know what you mean though, too. It's also been a LOOOOOOONG time since I even did anything on my big Ford LTL 9000, and I have 6 other projects for 4 other CB's to finish (read START!!) too!
whale392 Posted September 3, 2010 Author Posted September 3, 2010 Sorry about that Matt, my 1991GT Mustang build is taking up some time, along with the 62 Buick for the model club. The reason I asked about the wheel/tire diameter is that the specialized haulers who deliver/pick up our jet engines run 48' dropdecks with 9' spreads and their trailer wheels are smaller in diameter than the tractor wheels/tires combo. Just wondering, as I would like to do a 'jet limo' one of these days. I promise that once the CBP projects are done, I will finish the W900A!

Oh, no problem, I still have to get back on my T-Bird for your CBP, not counting all the others, but like your Mustang, my big Ford eats most of the time.
Gray Smith Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Wow guys we are 2 and 2 tonight with extremely useful threads for me...I'm now in search of 22 tires for my AMT Titan, cause i think the stock wheels look a little dinky. Great info again!
