Mike Kucaba
I was out of the build loop when these were intro'ed. Anyone know about a spoon test? The black base.Does that only apply to the colorshift hues?
MikeMc
Mike, you didn't miss much with these paints. The biggest downfall seems to be a lack of the proper reducer. There are a few that have had success with these paints. Unless you have a big stash of these, I wouldn't invest a lot of money in them..... The biggest rippoff was the inference that they were HOK paints.....they were not !... Old story here...I will not get upset, but the real House Of Kolors Paints are alive and well I get them from Coast Airbrush or the Black Gold Line from Slixx !! http://www.coastairb...ries.asp?cat=44 http://www.slixx.com/blackgoldpage.htm Edited September 26, 2010 by MikeMc
Longbox55
Agreed. They weren't bad paints, just very poor handling of the marketing and distribution, as well as the mentioned reducer issue. I personally liked them, and do have a stash (well, a whole rack actually) of them I picked up when the local RC shop got out of carrying models. You can still find them, usually in the clearance bin, at some hobby shops. Unfortunatly, those tend to be the not so popular colors. If you really want HOK colors, though, check out the links that MikeMc posted.
Mike Kucaba
When I moved to Mesa I checked out body shop supply stores for the usual stuff and came across "Space Age Paints" . I took the KK and asked the rep there about the recommended reducer. He stated that they used to sell it and had good results with a couple of different reducers. I went with his suggestions so I'll be testing( spoons) tomorrow. I'm interested in the colororshift line. I'll shoot these over the black base that came with the set and see what happens.BTW these sets are going dirt cheap on ebay, so I don't have a big investment in any of it. Longbox55
The colorshift paints are pretty neat. I don't have any good pix, but I did an AMT '40 Ford Sedan Delivery in Carribean Surf, it came out very well, especially when I get it out in the sunlight. bigmikevee
Hey Mike, I have 7 bottles of KK that I ot a couple of years ago, haven't tried yet, but curious what I'll get when I try. What were the couple of reducers he recommended to you? I am going to try lacquer thinner, even though they are enamel, I had heard that it would be quite effective, and should speed up the drying time. Personally, I haven't got a clue what I'll end up with, but it's worth a few drops and a couple of spoons. Will let you know what I get, and would like to know what happens with you. Thanks! Dry Urethane reducer, and/or the #112 Fast Dry Urethane reducer. I bought a quart of each for about $7.50. I'll do a test today on spoons with the Med Dry reducer.
