Hattley Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 Can I paint over chrome pieces (specifically the side moldings on a ’60 Impala) without any adverse effect, to achieve a “black gloss chrome look Or would a Sharpie do the trick?
DanielG Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 BMF does black chrome, but I have not tried it. I am thinking it would look better than paint.
Hattley Posted September 30, 2010 Author Posted September 30, 2010 What's BMF ? BMF does black chrome, but I have not tried it. I am thinking it would look better than paint.
Harry P. Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 Bare Metal Foil. But the "black chrome" BMF is no good, it doesn't stick. To answer your question, yes, you can paint over chrome. I do it all the time, have been for 30+ years.
Doughnut Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 Just to add a little to the comments, when using a black Sharpie, hunt down the "Sharpie Industrial - Super Permanent Ink" with the red lettering on the barrel. It is a much darker black and does not leave the purple/blueish tint. As for the Black Chrome Bare Metal Foil, in the past I did not have good luck with it. However, they recently (supposedly) changed how they make it and the last pack I picked up was fantastic. I have used it for many purposes including a complete dash on my Petty Plymouth. It's too shiny for window trim, but is great in those places you want a semi-gloss black look. And I've had no problems with it sticking either. Just my experience on this. Thanks.

Sounds like they may have reformulated the Black Chrome. I know they have a "new and improved" Chrome foil out, good to know that they also fixed that horrible Black Chrome stuff.
TurboKitty Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 I just wanted to point out that the Black Chrome version of BMF is a solid black (used to detail the blacked out trim on modern cars). It's not a transparent black like black chrome is. Is this the look you're going for? (a nice, shiny dark chrome look that is not as bright as regular chrome) if that's the look you want, then you'll need to spray whatever chrome parts you have with Testors transparent black (window tint black), this: The Black Chrome from BMF is this, and it's not transparent: Just trying to help, since black chrome is not the same as solid black

I know they have a "new and improved" Chrome foil out, good to know that they also fixed that horrible Black Chrome stuff. That is interesting on the BMF. My one and only experience with it was several years back and was the same as reported. I never used it again. The black also could rub off in handling if not extra careful. Gerry
Hattley Posted October 1, 2010 Author Posted October 1, 2010 Thank you for the heads up on the transparent black, I'll look for it!! TurboKitty Posted October 1, 2010 Posted October 1, 2010 no prob, let me know how it turns out! One thing though, once you get it, make sure to test spray it on some chrome plastic sprue to make sure it doesn't affect it at all. I've done the same thing to some tuner style wheels and they came out great

Hattley Posted October 1, 2010 Author Posted October 1, 2010 Here’s the chrome painted with Testors Gloss Black, that I painted last night. The Testors Transparent Black was hard to come by, spent my lunch today tracking a can down. I'll let you all know how it turns out and what I decide to go with.
