I was working on a 1940 Ford I had sitting around for quite awhile and found a lot of parts missing.

Ok, no problem I'll build my 71 barracuda 426 Hemi.

Washed the body and primed it, orange peel showed up.

Ok, stripped the body using brake fluid, washed it in Dawn and tried priming again.

Still no good.

Stripped it agin and washed in Dawn.

Tried painting it black and the paint sputters out leaving bad areas of paint.

Stripped again and washed in Dawn.

Painted it metallic Blue. Seems ok right now.

Geez.

It will be ok you only had to do it 500 times to get it right. LOL

That happened to me on my current 55 chevy I'm doing,it's been a long time since I've,

had paint problems that bad. I guess it's just one of those deals.

I'M going through the 5th cycle and maybe this will get right I hope.

God Bless

I'm not sure Dawn is potent enough to remove all the brake fluid residue. I rinsed my body with denatured alcohol, and all seems OK.It's probably better to rinse it in a 50-50 mix of alcohol and Windex.

Formula 409 works well for washing plastic parts. It's not that toxic and can be completely removed with a rinse. I use it to clean brake fluid and haven't had any problems.

Have you tried Easy Off oven cleaner?

I use it when I do need to strip one off sometimes it takes several rinse off then respray the cleaner back on steps

to get it to the plastic, about 3 times depending on how thick the paint is.

After that the dawn cleans it off with out problems.

Dave ,

Standard Dawn dish detergent works just fine getting the brake fluid off as does laundry detergent when using hot water in a bucket . I do suggest scrubbing the entire body with a tootbrush during the wash and the rinse . I have'nt had any problems thus far using this method . Just hope that Murphy does'nt read this post or I'm doomed ! B)

Oh man I feel your pain there, I cannot tell you how many countless times that's happen to me :) . I have always used Paint Thinner for the Laquers that I have used, and then washed the body and part off with Dawn antibacterial soap which seems to do it for me.

But I will point out that the others here have their own methods to do things, I suggest trying out what is suggested to you here, and then Determine what "Works Best For You", I have had so many good suggestions of methods and steps to use that I just picked and choosen what works for me. Try it on your next model, and it could be anything from Painting to How to Polish that bad boy to a great shine! It's how we learn :D .
