Hoosierfarmboy Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 I have been studying the newer vettes and have come to the conclusion the transmission is attached to the differential. Am I correct? If this is true, which current models are available? I have a project going on in which I will use one. Randy K
Jairus Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 That is correct. The clutch however is still attached to the flywheel on the manual shift car. The automatic however could have the torque converter at either end of the propshaft. I am just not that sure... nor care that much to check it out. At any rate, Chevrolet engineers felt that moving the trans back to create a "transaxle", helped balance weight distribution. This is not a new concept, as many european manufacturers (Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari) have done this for years!
rick6343 Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 Any '97-present (C5, C6) Corvette kit ought to have the transaxle.
torinobradley Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 IIRC, the Stingray III also has it (correct me if I'm wrong). And for one that is not Chevy, the Shelby Series 1 has an Olds engine and ZF Transaxle.
Chuck Most Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 And let's not forget the original Pontiac Tempest!

This is the rear suspension and transaxle from a Z06....(C6)
Terry Sumner Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 Last year I had my friend's 2004 Z-06 in my garage. He had blown 2nd gear so we removed the trans to take it to a tranny shop for repairs. Saved him 1800 bucks by doing this labor ourselves. So it's quite a project. The rear end, transmission and driveshaft tube all come down as one unit! Not tough...just rather involved. So while we had it there we installed a new clutch. Then an entirely new stainless steel Borla exhaust system with small hi-flow cats and equal length long tube headers. Then we installed a 150 hp wet nitrous system! Then we painted the car black and put red pearl in the clearcoat! Hand block sanded the whole car till it was glass smooth! This car literally sparkles in the sunshine and MAN!...what a rocketship! Wish I had some photos before the vandalism. One night the car was parked outside my house and some sumbitch came during the night and spraypainted Nazi words all over the driver's side! Police never able to find out who dunnit! Anyway...I digress. Here's a photo of the unit out of the car while it's all together....Hope this helps you. Hosted on Fotki
Hoosierfarmboy Posted November 3, 2010 Author Posted November 3, 2010 (edited) Thank you very much for the info. Will be looking for one of the models. The pics were very useful. Sounds like a huge undertaking to drop the drivetrain ! Randy K Edited November 3, 2010 by Hoosierfarmboy
