Tape for Two Tone

Whats the best kind of tape for two tone paint jobs? I've seen the yellow type is that 3m?

Tamiya makes an excellent 'yellow' tape. Also 3M Fine Line which most 1:1 car painters use.

Regardless of the tape used,always shoot AWAY from the edge,and shoot a coat of clear to seal the edge first.

Looks like Mike has some good advice. Always clear first, I've seen some guys get very good results with scotch tape and a coat of clear.

Another option, tho more expensive, is to use BMF. It is very thin.

I'm just getting back into building, what is BMF. By the way I was Air Cav 2nd of the 8th Regiment a long time ago. Thanx Happy V Day.

Bare Metal Foil = BMF

That's what I use ... then over lap tape w/ a wider masking tape & plastic wrap

i've seen people use BMF for masking before and i have a question about that. how difficult is it to remove after painting? is there a trick to using it ask a mask or do you pretty much do it the same as if you would be foiling say trim?

Bare Metal foil peals off without a problem . a bit expensive for some , but it can't be beat when it comes to masking off . Scotch tape works well , you just have to keep in mind that you have to put down a multitude of mist coats rather than a few heavy ones . BMF might leave a light residue , but it easily cleans up with a bit of Novus 2 . It's the diffrence between the men and the boys ,as always , the price of the toys !

Here's why I like 3M Fineline. Here is the 1/8" width on the roof between the louvers. Notice that it conforms perfectly going over the 'eyebrows' over the doors. That's all from the same piece of tape. Zero bleed-under. BMF and maybe Scotch may give as clean a line but you must cut that width yourself and work with a very thin, long slice of those.

Here on the hood, the same 1/8" Fineline but split in half to 1/16" to go on either side of the vertical splitter-no bleed. Just a sharp clean edge-first time.

Another favorite of mine is Chart Pack tape-architects supply. Here is the 1/32" width on the rocker panel stripes.

I use it mostly for large areas but I use the Fineline as the stripe or color edge and the Friskit from there to cover the larger area. It will not adhere well (for me) over moderately curved surfaces. On flatter surfaces it will give a reasonably clean edge, but burnish it down carefully.

What exactly is Novus 2. I never heard of it. I just finished a two tone, Tamiya lacquer painting on a 55 Chevy, and would like to remove the goo from the finish, where the tape was. The job came out way better than I had expected, and I dont want to ruin the finish using anything harsh.

Tom....Novus 2 is part 2 of the 3 part "Novus" plastic polish line. 3 is coarse for rough work. 2 is midgrade and very useful on model paints. 1 is the finish grade..never needed it as I finish with scratch X by meguires.

The cheapest place to get it is at a large discount motorcycle shop, Its used to clean and polish windshields on baggers,and touring bikes.

Goo Gone on a cotton tip will work perfectly with no harm too. You can polish with common toothpaste. When completely polished you can use spray auto detailer with microfiber cloth.

Mikey MC answered it perfectly ! Only thing I can add ,,,, When using Novus 2 , be sure to polish with a piece of soft 100 % cotton t shirt . You don't have to rub hard , and work in small areas , gently polishing until all the haze disappears . You'll be amazed at the finished product .

After using the Novus 2 , I apply a coat of The Final Treatment Detail wax using the same polishing method as the Novus 2 . This seals and protects your finish !

Since I use enamel for my clearcoat [except white] I always use Novus to polish my paint jobs. The results have been excellent.

That Mequires sounds good though. I have some at work and I'll get some and try it.
