Mike Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 I'm building this one courtesy of my wife's inspiration. Long story short, she had a nail polish color that she wanted me to paint a model with because "it'd look cool on a car". The color looked good in the bottle, but when sprayed found out it was a top-coat and didn't even begin to cover the primer. SOOO.... the build was doomed from the start by taking TWO purple baths, and ended up being orange and slapped together after a series of unfortunate events kept plaguing the thing. Here's the kit with a new nail polish that's close to the original (except this one will work). It'll have the CF hood and I'm going to make some tribal ninja star decals for the side, and give it some red running lights up front. Now I just need to get some clear decal paper!
sno_man80 Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Let me know what you had to do to get the polish to work, my girlfriend asked me the same thing, you could try using O.P.I. polish it has some wild colors but each bottle runs around $8. Keep us posted on how it turns out.
Mike Posted March 8, 2007 Author Posted March 8, 2007 Primed and painted. The first coat anyway. I've got some sanding to do. One thing is for sure though. This paint is a :!: :!: :!: :!: to make look even. Used half/bottle just to do this and still have the chassis and engine bay left. I'm going to Hobby Lobby this weekend to get some decal paper, so I can get on that next. I think I'm going to do the interior in a 3-tone black/gray/green.

Keep us posted on how it turns out. This stuff is in the $1.97 aisle. It works just fine. I mix it 50/50 with lacquer thinner and it lays down very well. I primed the model with Tamiya white primer first which lays down very smooth. The only trouble I'm having/had is that it takes a bit for this to build up enought to look even and not spotty. I've still got a bit to do, but thus far things are very promising.
bob paeth Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Your wife is right, the color belongs on a model, not on fingernails bob
Steve H. Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Nice color! Is it different enough from Tamiya Candy Lime gold to make it worthwhile? I ask because a friend did an similiar nail polish airbrush job with a gold pearl clearcoat and it looked exactly like the Tamiya paint! :?
Guest zebm1 Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 There ya go Mike....good start.  Zeb

My LHS has Tamiya paints, but haven't seen that color in the jar.
Mike Posted March 13, 2007 Author Posted March 13, 2007 Here's the mock up with the tribal flame ninja star decals I made. Ignore the CF hood decal. It's going. LOLOL I micro-sol'd the living :!: out of it and I can't get it to lay down at all. :? So it's getting "the purple bath" and painted black. LOL Thanks for following along.
Steve H. Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I'v found that the CF decals need microsol UNDER them to get them to lay down. The ink on top doesn't let the microsol get thru to the carrier. If you want to try it again, brush MS on the hood before laying down the decal.

Steve H. Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 And if it still doesn't conform, use my buddy's trick... A hot, wet towel to steam it down. Hope this helps...
Wildrice Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 You can also try using a short straw and blowing on it. I saw this demostrated at my club meeting last month.
