highway Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I just happened to be a little bored today waiting for the snow, ice, and rain to move in later tonight (YUCK!!) and was checking out a couple New Ray 1/32 scale trucks I picked up at the local Tractor Supply Co. after Christmas and found something interesting. Their cattle trailers in sets like this one are REALLY out of scale! The first tipoff was the HUGE amount sticking up from behind the back of my Freightliner Classic XL condo, I'd guess this thing would be almost 15 feet high! I decided after seeing this, I'd compare it to my AMT Wilson trailer I've been working on with my Ford, and the front and side walls are almost as tall as the 1/25 scale trailer! Here's a few comparison pics of the two, and even the width is not too far off the 1/25 scale trailer. Sure, I know it wouldn't be a drop in replacement, some modifications of two trailers would need done, but at least with some work, they would make a modern bullrack. Concidering the price if you get them like I did at the Tractor Supply store at 40% off the $19.99 price thanks to the after Christmas sale, you're actually paying less or near the same as a new AMT kit. Oh, by the way, just to show how far off this trailer is, the darker maroon colored Freightliner has one of AMT's 1/32 scale Trailmobile reefers on it's back.
Jim B Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Looks to be about the right height, but it looks a little short. How long is it? And how tall (in inches) is it?
SpreadAxle Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Are these plastic, metal or a mix of both? I see these in a lot of truck stops and some sell just the trailers by themselves including this one. It might be worth a look if they can be cut and modified.
mackinac359 Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Calling Ben Wicker or Gary Wallace ! They could take those side panels and make a 1/24th or 1/25th version out of that pattern. Tim
Kostas Parchas Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 (edited) Maybe it is possible with 2 of these kits to build one 53' ft long.... That means a lot of cutting, glueing, sanding, smoking, etc.... Sounds like a surgery  Kostas. Edited February 1, 2011 by Kostas
highway Posted February 1, 2011 Author Posted February 1, 2011 Looks to be about the right height, but it looks a little short. How long is it? And how tall (in inches) is it? Jim, I took measurements for you (and everyone else too ) and the body is 15 1/2 inches long, the bulkhead is 4 1/8 inches as is the height of the rear around the doors, the body in the drop section is 5 3/16 inches high, and the width across the roof is 3 1/2 inches. Are these plastic, metal or a mix of both? I see these in a lot of truck stops and some sell just the trailers by themselves including this one. It might be worth a look if they can be cut and modified. Ray, the trailer is all plastic. I think the only metal, other than the axles of course , is on the lower cabs right around the opening doors, most everything else is all plastic.
Ben Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 There was already a guy selling resin copies of sides he made using those New Ray trailers but they were poorly done. I would like to get a couple and see if they could be turned into a 53' spread axle. The bad thing is, it would be hard to cast the sides with them being that long.
Jim B Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Ok, so going by your dimensions, in 1/32 scale this trailer is 41ft-4in long and 112in wide. In 1/25 it's 32ft-3-1/2in long by 87-1/2in wide. What's the hieght from the "road surface" to the top of the trailer?
highway Posted February 3, 2011 Author Posted February 3, 2011 What's the hieght from the "road surface" to the top of the trailer? Sorry it took so long to get back to you Jim, but the height from the "road" to the roof is 5 3/4 inches.
mackinac359 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 What are the photos on the back of the NewRay box ? Tim
highway Posted February 3, 2011 Author Posted February 3, 2011 What are the photos on the back of the NewRay box ? Tim You mean on the back of the Kenworth's box?
Jim B Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 You were right. In 1/32 the trailer is 15ft-4in high; while in 1/25 it's 11ft-11-3/4in high.
SuperStockAndy Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 (edited) I actually have this trailer, it came with a Peterbilt. But be warned, the chrome will turn black if you get it wet. Edited February 3, 2011 by Android
Mr mopar Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Where to you guy's buy these truck diecast? in Canada all I have come across is Fast lane at toys r us. I like the look of the New-ray 1/32 trucks. Doug
dptydawg Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Using the measurements given I think that the trailer is close to 1/29th scale, based on the differene between an 88" wide trailer and a 102" wide trailer Thanks Carl
