Dr. Cranky Posted February 6, 2011 Author Posted February 6, 2011 All right folks, the painting continues before the prepping for weathering, which is going to include in the first round a little bit of salting on the chassis . . . here's a round of pictures to give you an idea of where it's at. The body was sprayed with a thinned out rust . . . and the chassis has been give several coats of rust and brown . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted February 6, 2011 Author Posted February 6, 2011 Here's a better angle . . . Now, I went ahead and dry brush a mixture of stone and grey randomly to bring out the panel edges and lots of the details . . . which also helps unify all the parts . . . I think you can see it well in these few pics . . . Remember that nothing has been weathered yet. I still have to add the chipping and some washes, etc . . . we are still far from getting done.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 6, 2011 Author Posted February 6, 2011 Finally, Cranky gets around making a video of his "Salting" technique. It's so easy you will run and try it. I hope so!
Dr. Cranky Posted February 6, 2011 Author Posted February 6, 2011 Here's part two. Let me know if you have any questions . . . remember that there are no rules (and therefore no mistakes) when it comes to this method . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted February 6, 2011 Author Posted February 6, 2011 All right, after the three vids, here's the progress I've made. Remember that this has all been the painting process . . . weathering has yet to began, and it probably won't until mid week . . . Here's the chassis . . . after the salting and a few of the other elements put in . . . (I will weathering everything without the wheels and tires. I will do them separately.): I like the way the aluminum of the wheels looks cruddy and beat up . . . Stay tuned in for more . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted February 6, 2011 Author Posted February 6, 2011 Here are some pics of the body awaiting weathering . . .
Harry P. Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 I see that Cranky has spared no expense on the photo backdrop!
Dr. Cranky Posted February 6, 2011 Author Posted February 6, 2011 LOL, Harry, the glamour pics at the studio will come at the end. With all the photo and video taking, I running crazy.
Tony T Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Harry is right...you are having so much fun doing this!! Thanks for showing the salting process...gotta give that a try soon...
made007 Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 the zombies better watch out, cause theyre about to be crushed!
Dr. Cranky Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 Harry, thanks for keeping me honest about the quality of recent pictures . . .you've been instrumental in keeping me motivated to strive for better pics, and for that I thank you once again. Now, having said that, stay tuned for a new round of pictures . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 Here's the Zombie Crusher/Roller painted with a few coats of metallics, some inks, and then sealed with gloss varnish, and 3 or four light coats of hairspray . . . all this for the impending painting and weathering:
Dr. Cranky Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 Here's the chassis completed and assembled . . . now the weathering and finishing touches will resume . . . which will included some pigments and lots of earth, sand, and mud spatters . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 Here's how we are looking so far . . .
LAone Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 very nice work cranky. i dig the videos, way better than a pic-by-pic tut. that roller though, looks tough. are you going for any blood spatter?
Dr. Cranky Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 Sure thing, Luis . . . I'm even thinking of building a little diorama base for this one too . . . stay tuned in . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 Folks, I'm taking the build to the next level which includes sponge chipping with some grey paint, then black and brown . . . the pictures are uploading, so hold tight. Progress report coming right up!
Dr. Cranky Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 All right folks, the painting and preliminary chipping in acrylic is done. Next up is weathering with oils and pigments, washes, and other details, and then this one will be done . . . here are some pictures that show you how everything came down finally to just two components, the body and the chassis . . . notice also that the interior and engine bay, since they are NOT going to be seen, did not receive any paint or details . . . We still have lots to do with the tires, and mud and blood spatters!
ajulia Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Hello there Mr. S' It was only a matter of time that we'd get to see the new chally done up battle horse style!! Erik Smith Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I am liking the build. Great weathering and props for sharing some techniques. The videos are a nice addition to the photos. Do zombies have blood, though?
Dr. Cranky Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 And the acrylic paint chipping is done both on the roller (hairspray technique) and the body (sponge) . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 Zombies have "gunked" up blood, which D. Cranky likes . . . it's dark like 40,000 miles oil in a car!
Tony T Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Keep 'er going there Doc! Looking good, er, bad, er...fantastic!!
Kanedge Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Looks great, are we getting a video on this technique as well? If so, can't wait.
