bigdodge88 Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 (edited) I am wanting to pick one up from him but I wanted to see on built and if someone has could you post a picture or two of the drivetrain? (engine, axles) If so I would greatly appreciate the help/info. The truck Thanks, Justin Edited February 21, 2011 by bigdodge88
disabled modeler Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Hi Justin... Its a pretty good kit in my opinion but it only builds the monster truck...if you have a Little Red Express kit you can combine the two and make a factory stock pickup though. Its molded in color of the box photo.
bigdodge88 Posted February 21, 2011 Author Posted February 21, 2011 Thanks Mark. I was planning on doing alot of modifying on this one. The axles will be plucked to be used on another truck I am working on. I have a few parts trucks in the same model range for the stock truck build.
Nick Winter Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 This was the last reissue of the Long bed kit, in somewhat of a stock version, without it being overly modified, to build it stock, you will need either an annual kit, or a Li'l Red Truck kit and if you use the Li'l Red Truck as a donor you will need the 2WD annual kit rear leaf springs for a stock ride height. Nick
bigdodge88 Posted February 21, 2011 Author Posted February 21, 2011 Thanks for the info guys. Anyone have any pictures of one completed?
highway Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I can't help with any pics, but I have one of the similar Ford Destroyer monster trucks (the 79) of that era, and there were actually some of the stock axle pieces and parts in the kit, too. Maybe you might get lucky and have the same true for the Dodge. By the way, I don't know how different they are, but I could take pics of the stuff in the Ford, but it's not assembled.
Longbox55 Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 The MPC Dodge didn't come with any of the stock drivetrain parts, other than the basic engine block. However, as mentioned, the stock suspension components from the LRE or any of the other MPC Dodge trucks will directly fit the chassis. Something of note, this kit is esentially a monster truck version of the Rolling Thunder pulling truck MPC released in the early '80s, using the same hood, intake, headers, and the front brush guard.
bigdodge88 Posted February 22, 2011 Author Posted February 22, 2011 Thanks for all the info fellas. I always think its cool to hear how much people know about the older kits. I am glad its not the stock drivetrain as I was planning on repurposing the axles. Highway: I have been looking at the older ford kits as well, so any pics would be great! Anyone else have any input/photos?
highway Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Highway: I have been looking at the older ford kits as well, so any pics would be great! Sure thing, I'll try to get them for you either later tonight or in the morning, going to be watching "Lizard Lick Towing" and then "Top Gear" in just a few minutes! Just keep in mind they will just be parts pics, I haven't gotten around to this one yet.
mikemodeler Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I have that kit around here somewhere, never got around to finishing it but I just might! To make that truck in stock 4wd form, a little kit bashing and a resin piece will get you there. The LRE, as mentioned, has the rear end and you can pick up the front axle, transfer case & leaf springs in resin from Dencon Resin to do a stock 4wd conversion of this kit. I might have enough pieces/parts to cobble together a truck in stock form and if I do, I might see if it could be casted by a resin caster.
VW Dave Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 I never had that version, but I did build the one called 'ThunderStruck' when I was a much younger fella; it was molded in black, had gold decals and wasn't a full-on monster truck. IIRC, it was a pretty good model....until I got to it with a full tube of glue.
