I had a G scale wrecker bed waiting for the right truck and picked up a Mack kit that seemed appropriate. After a few modifications to the bed it worked pretty good.

Right off the bat I had to enlarge the wheel well and move the rear axles back approximately 3/16". I also added a fender flair to cover the outboard tires.

I filled the front of the bed to close the tool boxes

I had to put spacers in to raise the bed 1/8" and made some frame skirts to conceal the gap between the bed & frame.

Heres a quick mock up

Might get it painted Saturday if it quits raining long enough.

That bed looks perfect for that truck Al, it almost looks like an old NRC unit I drove that was on the back of a 74 White-Western Star. That same company also had a 70something Mack R with a Holmes 750 on it, both were some tough old trucks. I'll be watching this one for sure!

Trials and tribulations ...

Kinda strange being a sealed kit, the model in the box was not what was pictured on the box. B)

Must of packaged it on a Monday. It is a Mack though.

No square tanks, no spoke wheels, different directions, etc. It's been hunt & peck trying to assemble this thing.

I did manage to get the chassis built and some weathering done ...

I also screwed up the paint job so it went into the stripper tank ...

Since it will be awhile before I can repaint it I ordered some two hole bud wheels and a Texas bumper for it.

Hopefully my luck will change, maybe not, but it will get finished !!!!! ;)

Looking nice so far. I like your frame weathering.

That's an onder model on a newer box. Daniel @ Plaskit offeres the Mack spokes & square tanks. I used his spoked on my Stevens International Mack R685St reissue that didn't come with the spokes or square tanks either.

I thought I was finished but when I looked at the pics I still need to paint the fender lamps, streighten up the tires and put a little more grease in certain spots. Ahh well It's close enough to post so here she is. A well used heavy tow rig. All the pics here ... http://public.fotki....-heavy-wrecker/
