forthlin Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 (edited) I've got the Lindberg Dodge Dakota & want to paint it white like my '99 Dakota. Unfortunately the body's molded in red. I've got Model Masters one coat lacquer system white primer & classic white to put over the primer. Will I come out with a pink truck or will this work? Edited June 6, 2011 by forthlin
charlie8575 Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 This is what I'd do. Get a can of either Dupli-Color or Plasti-Kote primer-sealer. This is a special primer used to seal substrates off from the color coats. Occasionally, on strong-colored plastics, you'll still get a little bit of bleed-through, though. When/if that happens, apply a VERY light coat of silver or very light gray paint, which will pretty much block the bleed. Then, you can, if needed, apply another light coat of primer (the white primer would be ideal at this point,) and then paint. If no bleed is evident, prime with the white primer over the sealer and paint. Charlie Larkin
MikeMc Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 OR PRIME IT THEN SEAL IT WITH WITH FUTURE BIN OVER THE PRIMER WILL ALSO STOP BLEED ZOOM ZOOM DID THIS AWHILE BACK IN SA....IT WORKS.i DOLIKE FUTURE, BUT ITS HARD TO AIRBRUSH IT W/O PRACTICE
forthlin Posted June 11, 2011 Author Posted June 11, 2011 I got the Duplicolor primer-sealer charlie8575 suggested & tried it on the tailgate. Everything went on great. I put the duplicolor on then followed that with the white primer. I let it sit overnight, lightly sanded it & put the classic white on. There's no sign of pink, just white. The body & bed come next. I'll post more pictures after it's painted. Thanks for the help.
Erik Smith Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 (edited) I used duplicolor sealer, duplicolor white primer, duplicolor paint and no bleeding on an orange body. Two light coats of duplicolor clear, still fine. Third coat of clear....bled through and turned the white peach! I couldn't believe the duplicolor clear was hot enough to bring the plastic color through, literally, 6 layers of paint! Just a watch out. Edited June 11, 2011 by Coyotehybrids
forthlin Posted June 12, 2011 Author Posted June 12, 2011 I'll be watching with my fingers crossed. I don't want a pink truck.
