57peppershaker Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Hi Guys In a moment of madness (ok, a couple of Buds also helped) I bought myself a 1;1 '86 Chevy Caprice 4 door Its Jake n Elwood style so aint the best looking car I've had but it gets more looks (but in a different way )than my bright orange 57 Chevy I always try to make a kit of all the US cars I've owned. I'm sure I've seen an 80's Caprice / Impala kit somewhere, maybe resin ? Anybody help me out with some info ? Are they still available ? Be good to go with my '95 Camaro, '87 & '91 Mustang and 57 Chevy 1;1 - 1;25 models.
Guest Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 I think Modelhaus has a resin kit of a Impala of that body style. That would be the closest one I am aware of.

Jim Gibbons Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 As Lee mentioned, Modelhaus has a 1985 Impala listed. I like these cars; my dad purchased a new 1977 Impala a few weeks before his death, and I ended up with it. It was a strippo version in tan, 305 V8, with the only other options being an AM radio and rear window defroster that NY State required. It was a really good car.
charlie8575 Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 The Modelhaus Impala could be modified into a 1986 Caprice with some work. In 1986, they changed the header panel and taillights to a somewhat more modern look. I'm not sure if the header panel itself (a piece of fibreglass) actually changed or not, but the taillight panel is radically different, and would be a bit complicated. The scripts could probably be repreented reasonably with either decals or photo-etch. Here's a 1985 Impala from the brochure. http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/static/NA/Chevrolet/1985_Chevrolet/1985_Chevrolet_Caprice/1985%20Chevrolet%20Caprice-10.html http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/static/NA/Chevrolet/1985_Chevrolet/1985_Chevrolet_Caprice/1985%20Chevrolet%20Caprice-11.html The taillamps from the 1980-'84 Impalas are identical. A picture is here. A 1981 Coupe is shown here. http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/static/NA/Chevrolet/1981_Chevrolet/1981_Chevrolet_Caprice-Impala_Brochure/1981%20Chevrolet%20Full%20Size-08.html This is the 1986 Caprice brouchure which you can use to do some side-by-side comparisons of a little easier. http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/static/NA/Chevrolet/1986_Chevrolet/1986_Chevrolet_Caprice_Brochure/dirindex.html Charlie Larkin

Yours looks a lot better than mine Junkman ! It looks like its been painted by Ray Charles with a yard broom At least I wont have to worry about the paint finish lol Edited June 13, 2011 by 57peppershaker

I imagine, though, some municipalities might have used one as the "limo" for the mayor or other officials to use on official business. The paint code will be located on either the radiator core support (not normal on a B-body) or up on the firewall. A simple paint job will make that car look ten times better. Charlie Larkin
Jim Gibbons Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 Back in the mid '90s, I worked as an engineer for an architectural lighting manufacturer whose parent company is in Germany. We had a German college student interning one summer, and he bought a 2 door Caprice with the "bubble" rear window. It wasn't in all that bad shape, but had a bit of rust from NY winters. When he left, he had the car shipped back to Germany. My friend Keith and I both thought he was crazy, as I recall he paid far less than $1000 for it, and it was going to cost a small fortune to transport. I guess these are a fairly rare find in the UK and Europe. I truly hope he either still has the car, or made a profit from it!
