Lownslow Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 aside from the rocker rust issue. the brakes felt funny cause it kept pulling to the left when i pulled the assembly off i was greeted by this little gem one bolt was holding the caliper bracket assembly the other had rusted so bad it broke at the head then it took a hour of hammer bashing to get the passenger side rotor to come off the axle. this was pretty much how i spent the 4th i have to wait till tomorrow til i get the new caliper bracket.
Eshaver Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 What a place, Chicago......... I bought a 69 Ford Econoline from a guy in Crown Point years ago. I drove it to Houston where I was in the van accessory business. Years later , the steering box seperated from the sub frame as I was comming off the North FWY, ( I-45 ) . Needless to say , I had to kick a tire straight as I limped it onto the service road as I was right next to the freeway too. A friend of mine helped me make a plate and we ran grade 8 bolts through the plates to hold thebox up on what was left of the sub frame . A couple of years later , the gas tank finially rusted through . Thats when I finially retired the ole van........... Ed Shaver
highway Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Sure you guys aren't talking about a FORD?? GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!
Chuck Most Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Sure you guys aren't talking about a FORD?? No... GM junk doesn't last long enough to have THAT many problems! (And nowhere were worn out radius arm bushings and abnormal front tire wear mentioned, so... )
Lownslow Posted July 5, 2011 Author Posted July 5, 2011 (edited) yup, those rear rotors sure can be a real pain in the ass to get off when the parking brake is set being from the salt belt probably didn't help much with the hardware either. wait until the transmission goes without warning or the front wheel bearings or the lights in the dash or the guages but man, are those headlight bulbs wicked easy to change out in no time flat! all that but the trans has happened, i decided to start shopping around for a import im thinking the 4 cylinder turbo Genesis Coupe or a new Focus Edited July 5, 2011 by Lownslow
Longbox55 Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 oh, and it came back with a "clean" Carfax report when we bought it. so much for that Yeah, Carfax is about the biggest ripoff out there, The "report" only lists what has actually been reported, anything not repaired or done under the table isn't going to be on there. BTW, I was only joking with the Ford comment, though I personally only own Chevrolet vehicles. Neither one has ever failed me. The "new" one is 26 years old, the older one (my daily driver) is 56 years old, with over 250K on the odometer.
Lownslow Posted July 6, 2011 Author Posted July 6, 2011 all hell broke loose today once it was off the jackstands . drivers side door handle broke, hood latch wouldnt release, and now the truck wanders at slow speed for some reason. had to go to a chevy dealer and 3 different parts stores to find hardware and parts i spent close to 370 wasnt bad putting it together but it was aggravating when it came to finding parts. on a good note i did find a dealer that has a turbo 4 banger 6 speed in stock going there first thing in the morning to test drive it and see whats up.
Chuck Most Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Sheesh- all the trouble my F-250 has given me in the five years I've owned it... Rear shackles and mounts for the springs (more chronic rust than outright failure) Starter terminal came loose (a little solder fixed that) Replaced the serpentine belt Now, it needs the radius arm bushings, and the right door speaker is starting to crackle. Other than that, don't regret a thing! I've owned newer GM products with half the miles- never had one treat me as good as my crusty old Ford, though.

Lownslow Posted July 6, 2011 Author Posted July 6, 2011 That's a cool looking little car Silken! Hard to believe it's a Hyundai. What year is your Chevy truck? hard to believe it drove the way it did it was a smooth ride and very well built cant say the same for the camaro and the honda accord that i also test drove. couldnt see anything driving the camaro the interior looked cheap but for a v6 it had some go and the accord didnt have the right feel to it and for a car that cost more than a camaro the interior was definetly lacking. my truck is a 02 its only stranded me twice since the 3 years i owned it im still gonna shop around theres not that many 2 door cars in the market so itll be a quick one friday im going to ford and next week for the heck of it try a Mini
