Custom Mike Posted September 19, 2011 Author Posted September 19, 2011 (edited) You're right Terry, but I wanted to take the easy way out. I've got three projects waiting behind this one, so I tried to make it easier on myself. I should have done it myself first, next time I will! Edited September 19, 2011 by Custom Mike
charlie8575 Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 I'm quite impressed with the hood, and great idea to have it cast. I assume it's Kevin Lutz from Missing Link that's doing that for you? Idea for the air pockets next time you run into such a problem: try popping them with an X-Acto knife and then putting a small amount of putty in. That'll fix the problem but good. Charlie Larkin
Custom Mike Posted September 21, 2011 Author Posted September 21, 2011 (edited) Idea for the air pockets next time you run into such a problem: try popping them with an X-Acto knife and then putting a small amount of putty in. That'll fix the problem but good. Charlie Larkin I did that about 5 times Charlie, I tried it first by puncturing them and dropping some Ambroid in them, then the putty. The problem was they kept popping up in different areas. So I just gave up and figured it would be easier to fix once it's in resin. And yes, it's Kevin, he's a really great guy, and one of the very best resin casters out there. He has an interior for the '68 Satellite that I bought (Too bad it didn't match the one Jay had in his car), and it's just incredibly well done. I bought some other stuff for a build of my old 1:1 '72 Charger, and a few other items. I asked him about casting this, and he said he would. Then a buddy of mine from Scale Avenue said once Kevin sent me the cast hood, he'd make me a good mold to use in the future. So I've got some great people out there helping me out on this, looks like I've got some favors to cover! Maybe if it all comes out looking good, you'll be able to buy a good '68 Satellite hood in the near future! Edited September 21, 2011 by Custom Mike
RodneyBad Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 Hood is looking Fantastic. Sign me up for a resin copy or 3
Custom Mike Posted September 21, 2011 Author Posted September 21, 2011 I fit comes out looking good (I'm going to try to clean the underside up a bit more before I paint and polish it), I may put 'em up for sale if Kevin doesn't want to. I'd just be happy to know that something I did was available to everyone, I'm definitely not doing this for the money! I just want to see a good part available for the next guy that tries this.
Tonioseven Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 I'd be interested in one of those hoods just so I can build a what-if factory freak. Progress is looking good!!!
charlie8575 Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 And yes, it's Kevin, he's a really great guy, and one of the very best resin casters out there. I concur completely. Kevin and Jeff Ballard both are great guys, and two of the best in the business. I've met them both several times and always look forward to seeing them. Charlie Larkin
Custom Mike Posted September 28, 2011 Author Posted September 28, 2011 (edited) OK, a bit of an update on the hood. So far, I'm sitting at the point where I think I'm ready for some paint. There are still a few "bubbles" on the top side, but I'll deal with them in the resin copies. The underside is in great shape, even though I had a slight accident with the primer. The primer went on "dry", leaving a texture all over the underside. But I looked at it, and decided it would work in my favor. I let it cure for a few days, then sanded it smooth wherever it was supposed to be metal, leaving the "dry" primer to represent the under hood insulation. Yup, lucky again, and proud of it! Here's the pics, the next time you see this hood, it'll be in some color! The underside, a happy accident for sure! Another angle, it should look great once it's in paint! I had to add a bit of filler to correct a small dip at the edge. but nothing serious... That's much better! And hopefully the final coat of primer. Total time so far: 12 hours, 45 minutes Edited November 10, 2014 by Custom Mike
Custom Mike Posted October 2, 2011 Author Posted October 2, 2011 (edited) OK, here's some more progress, we're almost ready for paint! The top side is almost perfect at this point, just two tiny flaws (They're little scratches) I think I can sand out, hopefully I'll be in paint tomorrow night! Edited October 2, 2011 by Custom Mike
