dabelltoller Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 hey i'm looking to build a bulk feed trailer. the new style is round but flat at top and bottom, the older ones more a less a gas tanker raised up, so first i wanna know if anyone ever did the texico fuel tanker and could tell me the size of it length with and hight of the tank its self ! and lets say i wanna make a scratch build round one, what is the best way of going about this ? now the trailer hasd up to 8-10 compartments so i can put round discks in side main tube so it would be stronger. but as for heating plastic and makin it round whould using a piece of pvc pipe as a mold to heat it on ? or could a use a thin piece of pre made pvc pipe to make main tube ? would that be cheating to build off of it! lol dumb question i know the link below is to give you idea of what i wanna do visually. i seen a guy build a model of this in 80s but he died so cant get info from him but i looked at his model and i think like i said used gas tanker as base for body of tanker! the tanker is scale should be about 20 inch long for a scale 40 foot http://www.walinga.com/index.php?id=203
BigBad Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Just a suggestion, why not try to take the AMT tanker and add two straight styrene flat pieces (same lenght as the tank body) at an angle at the bottom to make the taper and another one for the (apparently flat bottom)? Then make plugs for the front and back of the body to fill the new tapered shape. Leave the standard petroleum piping off, build the new transfer tubes and hardware out of styrene pipe stock from evergreen. I think you should get pretty close to what you're looking for. Any way you make it is not cheating, it's the results that count, get creative! I've seen great looking chemical tankers made out of pvc or abs pipes to get a smaller diameter tank body then use the suspension components and wheels from the amt Fruehauf tanker trailer. Anything goes, as long as it holds up, really! Look up "Scott WP" in the Flickr photo site, he has one built up like this.

That's my account on Flickr (Scott WP) I haven't built a bulk feed trailer but the thought has crossed my mind a few years back. In the past I have built several different tankers. These days I just don't have the knack to build like that anymore. I don't even have the patience to build a complete box stock kit. But take a look at my album if ya want if ya have any questions feel free to ask. On the home page of my Flickr account click "sets" then search those that'll make it easy to find what you're looking for. Good Luck!!! Scott
dabelltoller Posted September 1, 2011 Author Posted September 1, 2011 hey i think im going to go with the pvc pipe. here are some of the questions i got pvc pipe is really heavy, i sat it on my logging trailer it squatted down but it held. and i need to cut the pipe down so that will free up some wieght. but people that have used it what are they using to bond other platic to it? the pipe is very smooth would it be something to soand down a good bit to ruff it up ? thats about it for now this sould become a intresting project
Semi Trailer Mechanic Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 It's been a few years since I worked w/ pvc. I believe I did sand the barrel down w/ a medium/light grit paper, washed it and allowed it to air dry. I used TenX7R. A lot of it but it worked for attatching styrene and plastic. .
