Aftermarket wheels on Italeri axles?

Recommended Posts

Mark, I was wondering what to do myself with the new KFS wheels I just got. They do not have provisions for rotating wheels, the ones I got are for static only. Unless you get creative.

Cause I suppose that, like me you like your models to be... Able to roll a little bit, You know, it must be a grown-up kid thing.

I have been looking at the Italeri rear wheel hubs and think they are definitely too long. By shortening them you get something that looks better but you have to shorten the axle as well

and probably cut the provision for the retaining ring that sits on top of the inner ring hub. So maybe when you cut the inner wheel hub down, cut the axle as well but leave some material

to "heat swage" the axle shaft at the end of the inner wheel hub end. So you end up with rolling stock even with shorter axles and hubs. Remember to leave enough material on the axle

for when you are going to melt it down a bit with the swaging. I haven't tried it yet, but I think it's a viable option for shorter hubs and aftermarket hubs that are not hollowed out or without

provisions for a long axle.

Just my two cents.

Hello Bob,

Yes, I am after a way to install a "standard" inner and outer rear wheel and hub onto an Italeri axle, I have no idea why they are soo long? Anyway, I have a pretty good idea in mind, just need to get in touch with a good friend of mine who machines custom parts for me. I am thinking to machine a more traditional brake drum that would fit over the large axle pin and allow inner, outer, and hub to be installed in a more "normal" fashion.

I'll keep you posted,

Mark
