brodie_83 Posted October 22, 2011 Posted October 22, 2011 I recently had to strip my 80's Celica-Supra kit because I burned through from wet-sanding, so I'm starting fresh. I want to get a different primer than the Duplicolor stuff, but not sure which primers are compatible with Duplicolor paint. Will Tamiya primer work? I want the best finish I can get, and it all starts with the primer. I guess I wasn't that happy with the Duplicolor primer because it made a mold defect pop out twice after priming it with Duplicolor. Thanks in advance!
JamesW Posted October 22, 2011 Posted October 22, 2011 Hmm, I've never had a problem with Duplicolor primer, that's all I use anymore. I just recently started working with laquer and have only used Duplicolor (only thing I can get around here) so I wouldn't know what other kinds would work.
sportandmiah Posted October 22, 2011 Posted October 22, 2011 I believe any primer will show mold defects unless you fix them first. I lightly sand them then prime.
Erik Smith Posted October 22, 2011 Posted October 22, 2011 (edited) Is is etching the plastic (showing mold lines, joints, etc. after you fix/remove them)? Or are the defects just evident after you prime? I have not had issues with DC etching - some posts indicate it will etch some plastics. Are you using sandable primer? Their primer sealer is hotter and will etch plastic. You can block affected areas with Future to keep hot paints from etching. If you need another primer, try PlastiKote - find a retailer near you here, as it is not as widely distributed as Duplicolor. Edited October 22, 2011 by Coyotehybrids
Jantrix Posted October 22, 2011 Posted October 22, 2011 I have used Krylon under Duplicolor without issue before.
brodie_83 Posted October 24, 2011 Author Posted October 24, 2011 I believe it is sandable primer, but it's not in the big can. It's in the smaller cans like the paint is. That spot on the roof really frustrates me...and I have sanded, then primed...only to have it show through paint still.
High octane Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 I just used Testors primer the other day under Dupli-Color and it works for me. Try it!
MikeMc Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Duplacolor primer is not the problem. Thats all I use now....If you are having a "ghost " pop through then shoot a future barrier or use the tenax trick. I do not understand why you would use two brands of paint.
