jaydar Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Can anyone point to a good article for doing a pearl effect paint job? The Outlaw requires it to be white. I especially need to know about the pearl clear coat and the final finishing requirements. thanks, joe.
brad4321 Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 You probably already know this but Tamiya now has a rattle can pearl clear. I've used it ... and I like it.
MachinistMark Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 they also make a rattle can pearl white so does testors (one coat lacquer White lightning)
NitroJunky Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 (edited) I built this supra for a friend as copy of the one he used to own. this was done in pearl white. Some people may not do it this way but this is how i did mine. I applied 2 even coats of white base down and allowed it it to dry. I then applied 2 coats of the white pear top coat - an old school painter told me to keep the paint in the same direction and if painting panels off the car make sure you paint them in the same direction and the same amount of coats. Once this had flashed off i gave it 2 coats of high gloss lacquer. The colour i used was a 2 stage pearl from toyota. Hope this helps. Edited October 26, 2011 by NitroJunky

jaydar Posted October 26, 2011 Author Posted October 26, 2011 (edited) they also make a rattle can pearl white so does testors (one coat lacquer White lightning) Yes, i saw that. Would you put a regular clear like TS-13 over it ? thanks, joe. Edited October 26, 2011 by jaydar
LDO Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 FYI- Tamiya's pearl clear has a tiny bit of blue in it. Nothing wrong with that, just something to be aware of.
Dr. Cranky Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 You can also mix our own with Jacquard pearl powders.
MachinistMark Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 you wouldnt be able to rub out the pearl clear without sealing it with a regular clear first.
MikeMc Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 (edited) You can also mix our own with Jacquard pearl powders. That is the best way.....By mixing the jacquard pearls (about 30 different colors) into your clears first coat, then re clear over that. I used that on this 60....the top color is the same as the interior...HOK BC25 but I added #684 pearl into the clear....look at the difference between the back seat color and the trunk lid. http://www.jacquardp...ders/colors.php http://www.jacquardp...owders/sets.php I use the Series II #JAC0613 I get them at Michaels with a 50% off coupon.....note just a SMALL amount is all you need....if you want more effect..shoot a second coat. But to see and polish you must put a couple more coats of clear on top...I use both TS13 and Duplacolor clear through my Badger 155 AB Edited October 26, 2011 by MikeMc
LoneWolf15 Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 In addition to mike's post , you can also alternate between the pearled clear and the standard clear coats to add more depth to your overall pearl finish . Remember ! Alternating light mist coats between the two will provide you with the best possible finish ! Be patient and use numerous light coats rather than several heavy ones .
