paul@detaildownunder Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 Started this about a week ago as i wanted a quick project ,Its a rat rod with a Military theme . It's also my first try at weathering and i've got to say i like it! Enjoy
Len Geisler Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 Paul, Awesome work, how'd you rust that headder??? Thanks
Enzoenvy1 Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 That looks so good. I love the bullet holes in the window (if they are bullet holes, lol). Did you texture the exhaust before painting it to get a grainy raised metal rust effect?
paul@detaildownunder Posted May 9, 2007 Author Posted May 9, 2007 Thanks for the comments guys , the rust on the headers is a 3 part rust system i got from the hardware store and it makes real rust! first step is a rust colored primer then iron paint (real iron particles)and then a rust activator. Yes they are bullet holes in the windscreen (from the 28 lincoln gangbusters kit)there are also bullet holes in the doors and other side of the cab. It will also have a hand grenade shift knob and other Army style details including a battle helmet and military colored mexican blanket (thanks to Ken Hamiltons How To)on the front seat!I will post more pics on the weekend as i progress. Cheers Paul
Jairus Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 Very nice work there Paul! Keep us updated on the progress.
leadfoot Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 What kit are the wheels and tires from? Great job !!!
paul@detaildownunder Posted May 10, 2007 Author Posted May 10, 2007 The wheels are from the Revell Modified Racer & Trailer combo.Kit Number 85-4150. Cheers Paul
paul@detaildownunder Posted May 10, 2007 Author Posted May 10, 2007 Here's some current pics I've installed the engine and just need to finish the radiator hoses and carby's (including fuel lines and linkage)and finish plumbing the coil etc. Also visible is the Mexican blanket i made and some duct tape holding the seat together. as you can see the headers turned out better than i expected I made a wiring loom up with wiring and cut some thin strips of electrical tape to cover the loom and left a bit loose at the end as common in 1:1 tape. Any comments or suggestions are welcome (positive prefered )
Daniel Peterson Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 Any comments or suggestions are welcome (positive prefered ) Uh...not so sure there is any other type appropriate at this point. It's a verrry cool project that has a whole lot of character. There are well-built models, and then there are well-built models that have "it". Whatever "it" actually is, I don't know, but this thing is oozing with "it".
Harry P. Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 Dirty up those spotless whitewalls a little!
Steve H. Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 Very Kool! You've done a great job weathering it. Here's one a buddy of mine built to replicate a local 1:1 rod, but he kept it clean... I like yours more!
Olle F Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 Dirty up those spotless whitewalls a little! I agree. Some dirt and scuff marks would look just right. I'll make sure to follow this build, there's lots of interesting ideas, for sure! 8)
James W Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 I like the chopped down cab. It gives the engine prominence. A good looking truck. 8) How about some wooden amo boxes to justify the bed. Just an idea.
paul@detaildownunder Posted May 11, 2007 Author Posted May 11, 2007 Thanks for the comments Guys! ive still got a bit of weathering to do and the wheels and tyres are on the list. The tray is getting some rusty steel checker plate along with jerry cans and various stuff! Cheers Paul
paul@detaildownunder Posted May 13, 2007 Author Posted May 13, 2007 Just a quick update: I've been looking for something special to use for an aircleaner that would suit the theme and came up with a shell casing! but as i needed something fairly small i Machined this one on my lathe today. it should tarnish up fairly well and blend in with the rest of the project.
paul@detaildownunder Posted June 26, 2007 Author Posted June 26, 2007 Sorry guys iv'e been slack on the updates but i will get some more pics up soon as i can .I've had 4 model shows in the last month which has'nt let much modeling time! The white walls have been weathered and doors ,jerry can ,hand grenade shifter etc are now completed so it's almost done 8) .
Frank Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 Saw it finished at Sandown, voted for it. How did you go?
paul@detaildownunder Posted June 30, 2007 Author Posted June 30, 2007 G'day Frank , I got second place at Sandown which was great! also got a 1st at ballarat nnl & 1 st at kilmore nnl!! BTW where are you located?
paul@detaildownunder Posted June 30, 2007 Author Posted June 30, 2007 Ok here's some current pics, i still need to load the tray up with some more goodies so if you can think of anything cool let me know!!! 1/24 US helmet from a Hasagawa jeep is on the seat that i painted up and the hand grenade shifter is from a MPC 28 Lincoln kit also a good shot of the weathered white walls and tyres. This is my display base that i threw together for shows with a 1/48 scale bomb? and some dry transfer lettering and railway grass.
