Just curious how long you guys generally take to put a truck together. How much do you do a day? I do a couple parts a day but my Dad said he used to do 1 a week. Sometimes I wait a couple days.

Sometimes, Patience is a virtue!!! The truck I am currently working was started last year; but that's what it takes making all new frame, cab, allison automatic, tires, suspension and interior. There are not many 1/16 scale aftermarket parts out there, so it just takes much longer to make the whole thing....as far as daily time; most days I get at least 3hrs at the bench; I just finished up 6wks of 15 hrs a day (7days a week) to get two projects done...sometimes, that's what it takes...........Matt

Well, that is a interesting question, and as Matt said,Patience is a virtue!!! I think you have to look at it several ways, some people are happy to build out of the box, with paint they get close to hand, and that is fine, as long as they are happy with the results, who cares what or how they build as long as the person that is building is happy, now then you get some one that is well conversant with a truck, and is happy to scratch a few parts, mind you, not everyone has these skills, and some are better than others at it, but the point is they have a go, then you get others that are just so stupid with detail, that want to include every possible thing they can think of that with show the skills of the builder, and start to make things work, like drop down visors, wind up windows, moving seats, working suspension, door locks that work, tank caps that screw on,working brakes, drums that come off to show, fluid levels that show, and making all the correct rubbers for the tanks, and that dam list just gets longer and longer, all time consuming to say the lest, and when your skills get better, you start remaking what you have done already

How long does it take????, for me so far close to 800 hrs and 3 years to build just 1 truck, and it is not even half way...... here is a photo of the original

I asked the same question when I spoke to a much more experienced truck model builder then me. He said, it is like learning a foreign language. If you want to have result then it takes an hour a day at least. I think, it is very individual. Even though I spend long hours at the bench, my progress is very slow. First, I don´t make plans for my projects. I make decisions on the go. And I make a lot of mistakes too. Sometimes it´s one step forward and two steps back. Even if I want to build a stock box model, there is always a detail here and there that I modify or add something that the kit omitted. And with the quality of some of the old kits I have to clean each and every part. I hate all kinds of seams and grooves and pin marks showing through on a finished model. I try to take good care of all this and it takes a lot of time.

If you want to be fast and make your model collection grow in a rapid pace, then you shoud not bother with superdetailng. But some guys are able to make well detailed models with a percfect painting job / weathering and still have breath-taking building tempo. Like I said, it is very individual.

Difficult question to answer - while it may appear that I build a model a week sometimes, I really work on multiple projects most of the time. Small bits and pieces or assemblies whenever the inspiration strikes. Then I will go back to another project. Eventually, one project gets "chosen" to be finished and that one is done. Some models have been started years ago, others months ago. I know I have some cabs/hoods that were painted in 2004 that I haven't built yet.

Yeah as an artist I know it varies quite a bit. I have seen some of those crazy detailed models which are sweet. I want to get into more fabricating with models. Maybe I should of asked what was the quickest and longest you have ever taken on a model. <_<

Several have been on my shelf for years......Most are scratchbuilt, so a lot of times I'll be stumped on how something is supposed to look or fit, so, I put it away untill I find out and can do it correctly.

There's one thing about the time it takes.

If you try to keep up with it,it may discourage you.

If you try to guess how long it will take to build that special truck you may change your mind also.

I did this with a car that I built.

It was a AMT 69 Chevelle,I did'nt like the stance for what I was wanting and the body did'nt fit the frame right either.

So I decided to scratch build the thing's I needed including the frame.

I kept a record of building the part's and piece's for the part's and time.

Time for research and writing every thing up was not included.

Piece's to build the part's were 230

Just build time was 260 Hrs.

That was and will be the only time I ever do that,it answered my question on time involved in building a detailed kit.
