62rebel Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 i dug through my stash and found an unopened '49 from 2007... it's open NOW... i've already got a couple customs in progress and have decided that this one will be more of a hot rod than a custom. now, the Cadillac engine that Revell provided is excellent and i can't fault it; but i want something that says "coming THROUGH, back up!" so... what other engines have you guys been swapping into this kit?
Chuck Most Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 (edited) The existing Cadillac engine will pretty much accept any of the go-fast parts from the Parts Pack and Roth Outlaw engines, even a few from Olds engines. As far as swapping out the existing engine, the first one I ever built ended up with a Monogram '50 Ford flathead with the Ardun heads and intake. Fit pretty well and needed little to no effort to swap in. Edited December 1, 2011 by Chuck Most
Craig Irwin Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Guess it depends on what era your model is suppose to be built in, 50's, 60's or today. Anything from a flathead to a Viper V10 can be made to fit with work.
Chuck Most Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 427 SOHC!! LIke that idea! I will say a small block Ford looks lost in there, though. Tried one out of the Deuce kits in the Merc one time- right back out it went.
62rebel Posted December 1, 2011 Author Posted December 1, 2011 while the hemi and sohc are visually impressive and undoubtedly powerhouses, they don't fit into the theme of my build.... which, unfortunately, i didn't expand upon very far. my percieved '49 Merc will represent a circa early '70's budget rod... maybe a recycled early '60's custom enjoying a life as a grudge match racer. i'm using the kit reversed steel wheels, and took some of the drop out of the rear end. i'm using the full duals from the kit; added a third hole in the floor for the clutch pedal and scrounged the custom shifter from the AMT '51 Bel Air kit to use. no skirts, no sidepipes; it might even get my first flat black primer paint job.
Guest Johnny Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 392 Hemi from the Chrysler 300C. Bingo!!!
Chuck Most Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 In that case I'd go with a Ford FE- preferably a 427, depending on how generous the budget is. and of course I'd use the 'Mercury' valve covers from the AMT '66 Park Lane kit.
Craig Irwin Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 70's budget build? As boring as it sounds, small block Chevy, that's about the only engine used in any swap back then.
Erik Smith Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 390 FE from AMT's 67 Comet. A very nice model engine. Would have been pretty common back then, too, and easy to upgrade for the street.
Erik Smith Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 70's budget build? As boring as it sounds, small block Chevy, that's about the only engine used in any swap back then. I was thinking the same thing - grab a 350 from revell Nova or even a 327 from the 66 Nova.
Craig Irwin Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 I was into the street scene / cruising thing in the early 70's to mid 70's, and those W-block Chevys were long gone allready, even then.
LoneWolf15 Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Consider the motors from either the AMT ' 67 Mercury or the ' 66 Fairlane . Both build up well , are nicely detailed and will fill the engine compartment to capacity !
Dr. Cranky Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Nice . . . can't wait to see what engine you finally go for . . .
62rebel Posted December 1, 2011 Author Posted December 1, 2011 decided on a 440 Dodge with a sixpack, no chrome on the engine, as if freshly lifted from a salvage yard Superbee.... 4speed, stock manifolds. cut the original 6v battery out of the fenderwell and found a JoHan 12v battery in the parts box. did the prerequisite mod to the interior panels and moved the door cut lines forward, added armrests to the front doors, found some handles. found an MPC three gauge instrument cluster to add to the dash bottom.... this would have been the guy who showed up out on Airport Road on Saturday night and was seldom seen anywhere else, probably worked as a cop in a neighboring county..... sneeeaaky...
Dr. Cranky Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Curt, I hope you will share some pics of it when you have it done.
MachinistMark Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 i have 2 of these kits warming up on deck for when im done my 50 chevy truck ...
Nate Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 How 'bout the Hemi from the Revell 5 Window Coupe with the resin 6 carb intake from Replica's & Miniatures of Maryland?
Chuck Most Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 I've been toying with the idea of slinging a straight axle under the front of one of these, just because the combination of gasser and lead sled elements would look so wrong but so right together.

Chuck Most Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Try that under a Hudson......Jeff did...... http://www.modelcars...showtopic=48443 Gonna. I'm even playing around with the idea of an altered wheelbase Hornet, just to mess with people. Dave... that's about what I had in mind for the one I was thinking of. Killer build. Now I've just got to think of how to make mine different from yours!
