greymack Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Anyone ever use copper wire to build an exhaust system?
Mark Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Aluminum (floral arrangement) wire is available in a number of gauges (diameters) including some that should work for exhaust pipes. Copper wire bends pretty easily, but is harder to cut and tougher to file.
greymack Posted December 13, 2011 Author Posted December 13, 2011 Hey guys thanks for the info yeah I was going to use some welding rod but its kinda tough to bend.I had some copper wire kicking around figured I'd use that. Any of you ever build that AMT 76 nova as a factory stock?
Terry Sumner Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Try using solder. Comes in all kinds of thicknesses. I've also used K & S aluminum tubing. You can actually bend that stuff fairly easily...
The Modeling Hermit Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 I also use the K&S metal tubing. I like the hollow ends, and it looks realistic.
Mike Kucaba Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 I second the plastic rod.All the other materials will work too.Solid wire solder is good for headers .
PlasticKits Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 I have done a couple set of headers out of copper wire it bends real easy! and if you misbend it grab another piece. Solder works well also the 125 diameter is good for big blocks use the solid wire solder. The ones with a "core" the flux will leak out over time and wreck your model! K & S alum. tube works very nice one trick I've learned put a piece of Evergreen tube inside as it will support the tube as you bend it and will not colapse and if you are doing side pipes you can grind the Evergreen out sometimes you can pull it out. VW Dave Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Soft aluminum 'armature wire,' which is intended for sculpting forms, works very well too. It's lighter weight than solder, bends as easy as copper wire, and polishes up quite nicely to boot. As it's not tubing, kinks are not an issue either. Most well-stocked craft stores like Michaels or A.C. Moore carry it in various sizes.
