torinobradley Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 I have a couple of builds that I will be replacing and creating better sidepipe headers for and am looking for a suitable diameter solder for it. The engines are big block Chevys so the header tubes need to scale out to about 2". I have a short lenght of .093 from a plumbing pack but cannot find any outside the plumbing pack and don't want to purchase another torch/tank/etc just to get some more .093. Does anyone have a good sorce for model suitable solder in or around the .093/2mm size? I also read somewhere I'll need to stay away from certain solders because of content or rosen core. Anyone know the skinny? Thanks!!
whale392 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 .093" is HUGE for primaries! .062" is roughly 1.5" in 1/25th scale and about what most primaries are. But, to answer your original question, look to Radio Shack or any Electronics repair section of some home repair stores. They usually have several sizes of solder available. DO NOT get the acid-core stuff, rosin core is safer, and silver solder is by far the best to use. Hope that helped a little.
Guest Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 I make my headers out of styrene rod. It's a lot easier to form a decent looking collector with it.
SuperStockAndy Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 I myself prefer styrene too. Then it could be painted with Metalizer...you might even be able to find a Metalizer that looks like it's got the ceramic coating on it.
oldnslow Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 I buy silver solder from Home Depot, a roll is about $10, it's around .100". It's on the plumbing isle with the torches.
