scalenut Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 take it easy.... it's just my way,, hope it helps ...works for me .
Greg Pugh Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 Nice video Andy! It really helps as I've been looking for some info on doing this. I'm ready to use it for the first time.
Chillyb1 Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 A very useful video that is full of good advice for those yet to try Alclad II chrome and those who haven't yet got it right. I'd add a couple of things. Look at the results in several different kinds of light because sometimes it looks great until you see it in bright sunlight, or you can end up spraying too much on and it turns to silver. Also, I've found that the Alclad black base gives the best results by a long mile but it won't stick to an unprimed surface; I've also found that I get the best results when the Alclad black base has only been sprayed an hour or so before shooting the chrome. And the same process with Alclad's polished aluminum yields equally excellent and realistic results. An important point that Andy makes, and I'd like to reinforce, is that the Alclad my initially look splotchy and awful, but give it a couple minutes and it will turn to chrome.
Dr. Cranky Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Excellent vid, Andy. Yes, that's the trick. House of color has a chrome product that works in a similar way and the trick is also to just spray lightly so that the base shines through and gives the part that chrome look.
B-onefan Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Excellant video!! I have always wanted to try it, now I will. Thanks, Mike
scalenut Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 thanks , I probably could have made it shorter tho ... I mean... how many times could I say" spray it light "...[facepalm] .. I'm terrible at narrating video.
scalenut Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 (edited) I agree with chillib also ,,, don't worry about letting the black enamel dry for a long period ,,, the chrome seems to work best over that dry but grabby enamel finish... an hour is just about right and the chrome will still dry and handle with no issues. Mooneyzs Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Andy... Great Video man!! thank you for sharing. I was wondering the best way to spray this stuff. I have a bunch of different colors that I haven't tried spraying yet, but I am looking forward to it. Have you ever used Alclad's clear over the chrome after you are done. I picked up some gloss and matt clear from them as well to mess with.
scalenut Posted January 11, 2012 Author Posted January 11, 2012 chris , most of the time I leave it uncleared the only clear I have used over Alclad chrome so far is Future. I typically use it for smaller items ,largest being grills and bumpers . when I do future, I dip them and drain on a paper towel, covering with a bowl while they dry. same technique some people use on windshields/glass. I have no experience with the alclad clears.
Chillyb1 Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Gentlemen, here's an example of Alclad chrome on top of Tamiya's TS-14 gloss black: I think it looks magnificent.
