kbelcher Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 I know this might not be the right section for this topic but I was wondering if any other stores besides a hobby shop would carry the fine sandpaper sheets? Also, what exactly is wet sanding and can you use any sandpaper for it? Just need a little help with sandpaper lol
stulee11 Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 most automotive stores sell wet and dry paper but they only go from 600 up to 2500 grit... thats fine for prep work but for polishing you will need wet and dry paper from 8000 to 12000 grit. and that i have only been able to get online for hobby sites. wet sanding is were you sand the body under cold running water you can use some soaps to help with the cleaning of the model... but make sure it doesn't have and moisturisers in it as they will react with the paint .
randx0 Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 usually it should say right on the sandpaper wet dry and it should be black or dark gray. I agree I haven't found the polishing grits (3600-12000) anywhere besides the hobby shop.
kbelcher Posted January 13, 2012 Author Posted January 13, 2012 How should I know when to change grits? Also, do they come in packs or individual?
stulee11 Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 (edited) when i wet sand i try to feel the difference... at first it feels rough and grainy the after a few strokes you should feel the change to it being smooth. then change to a finer grit. BUT when doing it be VERY careful not to burn through the paint... mainly when you polishing be very careful on that part... also try to look on "youtube" as dr cranky has put a video on about wet sanding and i am sure a few other model builds have to. you can get them in packs but they vary in what grits you get in the pack... i mainly buy them as single sheets because then i know i will get what grit i need... and it works out cheaper to buy single sheets... over here in england one sheet costs 0.50p were as a hole pack can start at £2.00 and you most likely wont use half of them . crazyjim Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 (edited) When I'm wet sanding a paint job, I'll mix a few drops of Dawn dish detergeant in the water to make the water "wetter". The real fine grits I get online. They're available from several sources. I think the last set of real fine sandpaper came from ScaleDreams. Edited January 13, 2012 by crazyjim
scalenut Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 this stevens international set goes up to 12000. My pack has lasted a long time since I only use small squares from it http://www.megahobby.com/assortedultrafine35x8hobbysandingsheets8diffgritsbag.aspx
Mike Kucaba Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 And when you use wet or dry paper(even the higher number cloths) soak them for a few minutes before starting to sand.
