jaydar Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 My drill is losing its grip, really, for any bit smaller than a #77. This tool is almost 30 years old now and i figure it may be time for a new one. Thanks, joe.
SuperStockAndy Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 You can put masking tape around the top of the bit, or you can just get a new one. Although since this one is old it might have sentimental value to you.
MikeMc Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 (edited) general makes a 4 part pin vice set.....will work from #80 to #1 You could swap out the collet to your old faithfull....... Edited January 18, 2012 by MikeMc
tabsscale1 Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 I just use my Excel knife handle for mine.Mine is split clear across to form an x on the end of the ball when i tighten it. It clamps like the pin vise but tighter in the middle. Haven't used a pin vise for my smaller bits in years.
Randytheroadrunner Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 I bought one of these for my cordless screwdriver. Paid $6.99 for it on Evilbay. It sure beats the wear & tear I got from twisting a pin vise.
jaydar Posted January 19, 2012 Author Posted January 19, 2012 thanks for the suggestions. I have tried the masking tape thing with mixed results. I have an excel knife but cannot recall now if it is split in an "X" I think only a " l ". Randy, I really know what you mean about the wear and tear on the hands. That bit works down to #80????? joe.
Randytheroadrunner Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 (edited) Joe, mine does, but to make sure ask the seller before you buy. If you do a Google search, Dr. Micro Tools has them on their website also, and theirs specifies down to #80. I got mine because I detail HO scale diesel locomotives, and drilling hundreds of holes for hand grabs and lift rings with a pin vise takes days. Edited January 20, 2012 by Randytheroadrunner
Dave Ambrose Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I get good results from my General, even with the tiniest bits. The top of any pin vise should swivel. Otherwise you're gonna need a lot of mole skin.
Mercman Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 If your wanting a good pin vise get a X-acto. I tried all the brands a this one performed the best and will hold a #80 very tight. Hope this helps you. This is what I use also. I leave the plastic cap on the unused side and it turns perfectly for me. I also have a battery operated drill by X-acto. I have had, and been using this one since 1975. Runs on 2 c-cell batteries.
jaydar Posted January 20, 2012 Author Posted January 20, 2012 thanks again, i will look at all the suggested items. joe.
