m3fan Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Hey Truck Modelers, I have this desire to build a lowrider/show truck and was wondering if there are any wheel/ tire's out there that would be more appropriate. I notice on the "real" trucks the wheel size looks larger and the tires are lower profile. The truck I'm using is the Revell 359. I also have a "Black Magic"parts truck. I have built quite a few rigs in my teenage years that seem now to worth a fair amount of $. If only I knew! Thanks for your help, Russ
Semi Trailer Mechanic Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 I've seen some 1:1 hot rod trucks w/ 255.75.R22.5's on them. That's the tires used on some lowboy trailers and a very common tire size used on the steerable lifts used on dump trucks and the strong arm axles on some mixers. Testors had a few 1:28 scale die-cast models out that would work. I've also seen a few 1:32 scale trucks at toy stores that had wheels that would work as well. I'm sure there's a few resin wheels availiable in the after market as well. I don't know of any but I sure a few other guys on the forum can point ya in the right direction.
monkeyclaw Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 I think you will get a much better "look" by altering the ride height of the suspension. By simply going to smaller wheels and tires you will lower the truck; but you will also fail to fill the wheel openings in the front fenders, unless you do filler panels to the sides of the front fenders to make up the difference. You can readily lose about 6 scale inches by shaving the kit parts (springs, mounts, axles) to get a lower stance on the truck. A simple front end solution is to mount the front drop axle above the springs....this is an old school lowering trick that's easy to do. I am working on a custom right now; which has all new suspension; which results in 12" of drop to the truck.... I would post pix; but haven't taken any of this truck yet; when I do, they will be up on my siye.........matt
m3fan Posted January 21, 2012 Author Posted January 21, 2012 Thanks for the help and info. I was going to lower the truck with those same ideas. I'm not as much worried about the wheels as much as the profile of the tires. The smaller scale tires could be a possibility. Thanks again, Russ
