Fabrux Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 I figured I would try something different for a bit. I had this trailer in a combo pack with a Datsun pickup that's supposed to haul dirtbikes, but the bikes didn't come with the kit. So, I figured I'd haul out some hobby wood and go to town. Apologies for the fuzzy picture; my camera isn't the greatest and neither is my lighting...!
Scottnkat Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Looks great! Wonderful idea using the wooden sticks!
Fabrux Posted February 3, 2012 Author Posted February 3, 2012 I wish they were sticks... it was actually a 1/16 x 3 x 24 in sheet that I cut up. The deck boards are scale 2x6 and the side panels are 2x8. The trailer itself scales out to be about 5' x 8' or thereabouts.
Rob McKee Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Looks cool. I have one of those kits, geeze I better check and see if the dirt bikes are in it.
diymirage Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 looks pretty cool i might do that to the same kit mine has the dirtbikes but i hate seeing them on trailers (seems redundant to pull a trailer behind a pick-up) so i swapped the bed with a ford unit that is big enough to accomodate BOTH bikes
Dr. Cranky Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 You got my attention with this one right away. It looks different, and I think when you paint it and add details it will really stand out.
Fabrux Posted February 3, 2012 Author Posted February 3, 2012 When it comes to the wood, I'm not sure what to do! Paint it with regular modelling paints or should I stain it?
modelmonster Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 have any of you built a trailer exactly like that only to haul cars.
Fabrux Posted February 6, 2012 Author Posted February 6, 2012 I haven't built one like this for car-hauling but I did modify one of the Revell boat trailers for car-hauler duty. I have a couple extra ones so I might look into making them wood-decked. Thanks for the idea!
diymirage Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 When it comes to the wood, I'm not sure what to do! Paint it with regular modelling paints or should I stain it? depends on it , will this be a work horse or a queentrailer (pun intended) if its a workhorse, go ahead and paint it if you want it too look good, like it was build as a labour of love, i would stain it
Fabrux Posted February 6, 2012 Author Posted February 6, 2012 Well, it wasn't built as a labour of love but it is supposed to be a working trailer. Paint would probably be best, I guess. I actually built a 1:1 trailer and used pressure-treated lumber for it. I never stained it or painted it and its still holding up pretty good so far.
modelmonster Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 I was wondering are all the hitch sizes the same
Fabrux Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 Any of the hitches and balls I've seen in kits so far have been pretty much the same. The Datsun kit this came from, the Revell sets with the boats and trailers, the AMT Caprice + trailer, Harley F-150... Then again, when you're talking a 2" ball in 1:24/1:25 scale, the difference won't be much.
modelmonster Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 I guess ill probably just buy the biggest one so i wont have to worry about anything that will come soon though since I am just about done with my 1966 ford galaxie 500 xl
