Those were pretty KOOL wagons back in the day... I had a '74 Galaxie 500 wagon with a 400 modified in it... For the tank it was it really ran well and was rather quick too...

I was doing 65 when the guy blew by me. My guess was 75-80 .

behemoth? park an Expedition beside it. THAT'S a behemoth.

not to many cars of this size in today's lineups. I agree that the expedition is big but dang this car was longer then your average vehicle . Edited by hotrod59f100

I seem to remember some of those old wagons had a third(possibly even a fourth) seat that actually faced the rear of the vehicles. I know they were long with rear door that swung out from one side to open.

There was a lot of cool stuff in the rear of a wagon. The fold-down third seat was generally an option, and almost always faced to the rear. I seem to remember my 1965 Chevrolet Bel Air wagon had an under floor storage area where the third seat would be. My grandfather's 1964 Studebaker Wagonaire not only had a rear-facing seat, but it had a retractable panel overhead that could be slid forward, giving the rear seat passengers a sort of convertible. I loved riding in that.

Prior to the early 70's, wagon rear doors usually opened like a pickup tailgate or clam shell. In the very early 70's, I think it was Ford that introduced the tailgate that opened like a truck tailgate or a car door. I always thought that was a neat trick.

Man, that thing is awesome! Mercury Montego. Haven't seen one of those that nice since the '70's. Hope that guy is'nt driving that thing in all that salt up there! I think Motor City Resin does a Torino wagon in scale, could possibly scratch build the front end between that and a '73 Cougar kit. ?? Would love to have one of these babies in 1/25. I had a copper colored '73 just like it once. Nice car.

The full size wagons were even bigger- the Ford products were wide enough they made the "third row" seats face each other rather than backwards

Ford called their tailgate design the "Magic Doorgate" - not quite as trick as the 71-76 GMs which had the clamshell with the halves that disappeared into the roof and floor

I had a 97 Expedition and its not as big as you think. Especially if you're already used to driving pickups anyways. B)
