Scale-Master
I know it's a little late, but I have found it is easier to build the engines on these kits before priming/painting. At the rate you are going I would expect to see you doing another car that uses the same engine though...
Haubenschild
I will make sure to do that next time Mark. The engine block has been assembled and shot with one coat of Tamiya TS-17 aluminum , after another coat of aluminum it will be dull coated
Mike Kucaba
Interesting. I have this kit and popped for the PE set also.Formula 1 is somewhat foreign to me so I'll keep up on this.
Scale-Master
Actually... I think it looks good with the shadows in that shot enough to maybe just go to the dullcote. But then it is just one picture, I'd hate to steer you wrong from one photo...
Haubenschild
The interior was masked off and brush painted with Tamiya XF-16 flat aluminum. I probably should of shot the interior with gloss aluminum since the interior is quite shiny in pictures of the actual car and the fact that the finish is quite textured because of my subpar brush painting skills Edited February 27, 2012 by Haubenschild
Haubenschild
The chassis has been masked off and sprayed with Tamiya aluminum paint The engine has been wierd , This is the first time I have wired an engine , the silver details were picked out with a sharpie ( I will clean up the silver mistakes with black sharpie ) Edited February 27, 2012 by Haubenschild
Haubenschild
The wing and top half of the body have covered with 3 coats of Tamiya TS-26 pure white , after masking off the white , Tamiya TS-36 flourescent red will be applied. I know that TS-36 isnt the exact colour , but I dont want to wait 2 weeks for paint
SuperStockAndy
Very cool Never knew they ran Ford engines.

Rmodeler
The yellow Tamiya masking tape cuts a pretty fine line. Also there's this stuff I sometimes use called Parafilm. It's reeealy stretchy and will conform to just about any shape you put under it. http://www.micromark...ilm-m,7551.html Not cheap anymore i notice...lol Heres an idea that may or may not work. What if you waited until the paint is really dry, lightly sand down the rough edge, then take a thin strip of clear decal film which you've painted with the same fluorescent red and lay it over the edge, it might do the trick. Since the color breaks are all straight on that McLaren, it might work. I don't know if the paint will melt the decal film, gotta test that, but just thinking out loud ... lalalalala Oh PS: If you can rig up an X-acto knife with two parallel blades, you can cut nice even-width strips from the decal film. You just have to figure out how wide you want them to be before you make the knife. Edited February 29, 2012 by Rmodeler
Haubenschild
Cool tip roger! , I will be sure to try it out!
Mike Kucaba
Just curious, but what would be the actual red color for this. And I don't use this tip often, but the really best stuff for getting a tight line between colors is Bare metal foil. And I use to work for 3M and their best tape doesn't works well, but is cheaper. Haubenschild
I am not sure what the exact colour is , but I have heard that Hiroboy makes a red that is very similar to the red on the 1:1 Edited February 29, 2012 by Haubenschild
Roadkill2525
Liam, the flourescent red would be correct for the McLaren MP4 cars and the Penske Indy cars
Rmodeler
The "rocket red" has changed over the years it was active. I know that the red and white paint for the Penske PC-18 was manufactured by PPG. But the red of the era McLaren you are building was far more orange looking in person. By contrast, the fluorescent red of a 1990s Senna McLaren was far redder and more similar to the Penske color. Haubenschild
I added the decals to the top of the body ( I will be using the decals for James hunts' car ) and yes I will fix the crooked # 11 decal Edited March 1, 2012 by Haubenschild
Haubenschild
I assembled the transmission and added decals to the engine
Haubenschild
Today I added a few more things to the engine , I will have to wait at least a week to get paint for the Headers though , which is kind of annoying
