Short wheel base or frame stretch??? I have the cummins thats suppose to go in it and the road ranger tranny i believe it is??not sure

yeah im doin the 3 axle straight pipes i dont have 12vz1 i might have a 8v71 i was goin to do all chrome wheels but i goin with rear spokes

You're all set! But as much as I like these 2 stroke Detroits, I think if you're going to do some heavy lifting with this truck you might want to use another engine than the 8V71 unless it's heavily boosted and customized. There you go, make it a twin turbo 8V71! The 12 probably wouldn't have fitted under the hood anyway. Have fun with it! Oh, and spokes look tough!

K heres where i am at i kept the paint put about 4 coats of clear on today made some new fuel tanks the others were to long i tried chrome wheels the whole way around but it looks better with spokes in the rear i still have to setup the tag axle and make a battery box. i am going to use straight stacks and dual vortex air cleaners instead of the single square one and lubifiner and i am going to run full chrome rear fenders in the rear with the step up for the tag

Actually the dd 12v71 would fit fine. Everybody seems to be under the misconception the 12v71 is a huge engine when in reality it's no longer than the ntc 350 Cummins the Western Star kit came with and the same width and heigth as the 8v71. Also 8v71s did do heavy work I've seen many pulling 11 axle Michigan road trains in the 60s and early 70s they just used gearing to do it. Either way great project keep on posting. PS just for the record the 12v71 was only 852 cubic inches.

Cool Project you've started here!

If you're still open to opinions here's mine. Take the truck and strip the whole thing down to bare plastic and start w/ a blank canvas. Start by painting your chassis Tamiya semi gloss black. Next base coat your cab Tamiya gloss red. Using 1/4" wide masking tape wrap the hood/cab where you want the stripe to be. Start at the front of the hood instead of having that hook. ( Starting the stripe at the end just looks cleaner) Top coat the cab using Tamiya gloss black. Remove your tape when dry. Detail your interior either black or tan. Get rid of the lift axle all together. Clean up your fuel tanks and paint them w/ Model Master Aluminum Plate Metallizer. Wait over night and polish using tissue paper then top coat w/ flat clear. Metallizer paint will rub off unless sealed. Put your battery box behind the fuel tank on the drivers side. Use some budd rims for the drive axles painted gloss white. If you have the half length diamond plate fenders like those from the W900 kit use those and hang some half length mud flaps off the front and use regular flaps behind the rear drives.. Add a hydraulic oil tank behind the cab and a fitting for a hydraulic hose to screw on to. This is just my opinion...

If I rebuild a model here's how I strip it. I don't bother breaking it down first. Unless you want the chrome pieces left. Leaving the tires on cleans them as well. This one I did a few years ago. I stand corrected "re did"

Which ever direction you take this good luck!

Yeah something along the lines of that truck however it has the hydraulic hose plumbed into the diverter valve instead of the female quick connect.

Here's a few trucks put stripes on in the past...

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, since the 12V71 is actually like 2 six cylinder banks in a v shape, so it can't that much longer than a big Cummins or Cat 6.

Maybe it would be the combination of lenght and width that would be the problem. Anyways, Craig doesn't have the 12.

About the 8V71, what I read about it aften, is that it didn't have much torque... So you know, if I had big heavy duty stuff to pull I would have used the 12V71 or a Caterpillar 3408 or a Cummins KT.
